When can babies eat wood ear mushroom?

Cooked wood ear mushroom can start when your baby is ready for solids, at about 6 months. It is a jelly-like mushroom shaped like an ear.

It grows wild across Asia and the Pacific Islands, and large farms grow it too. You may see it called hei mu-er, black fungus or kikurage. Fresh mushrooms spoil fast, so outside their home regions they are mostly sold dried. They have a chewy texture and soak up flavors easily, which suits dishes such as suanla tang, China's hot-and-sour soup.

Wood ear supplies zinc, selenium and vitamin B6, nutrients that help growth, immunity, the heart and metabolism. It also has fiber. Mushrooms offer prebiotic carbohydrates too, which feed friendly gut bacteria.

Wild mushrooms

Buy mushrooms from a trusted source. Do not pick them in the wild unless you are an expert, since poisonous look-alikes are common.

How do you prepare wood ear mushroom for babies?

Dried wood ear

Before cooking dried mushrooms, soak them in water until soft. Boiling water is quick, and cold water takes longer. A cold soak should happen in the refrigerator, which lowers the chance of food poisoning.

Do not serve them raw. Raw mushrooms can carry bacteria such as Salmonella. Cooking cuts that risk and makes them easier to digest.

Gut effects

Wood ear provides fiber and fluid, which feed friendly gut bacteria and soften stool. Add fibrous foods gradually and regularly. Some gas or loose stool shows the gut adjusting. Bowel habits differ between children, so ask your pediatrician if you are concerned.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to mince and mix inmash

Cut: Finely chopped

Mince cooked wood ear caps very fine. Stir them into easy-to-grab foods such as egg strips, or into soft, scoopable foods like rice porridge, mashed vegetables or yogurt. Throw away the thick stem. Soak dried mushrooms in water until fully soft, then cook them thoroughly.

12 months · How to prepare chopped and thin slicescube

Serve cooked caps chopped or thinly sliced. Cooked wood ear is hard to chew, so scatter the pieces over the tray or table and do not pile them up in a bowl. This keeps your child from stuffing handfuls into the mouth. After 18 months, offer bite-sized pieces and thin slices. With mature chewing and tearing skills, larger pieces can be tried. Show how to chew with the back teeth using big, exaggerated mouth movements.

Is wood ear mushroom a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Rubbery, slippery and hard to chew. Cook thoroughly, discard the thick stem and mince the cap very fine.

Wood ear is rubbery, slippery and hard to chew, which raises the choking risk. Cook it thoroughly, discard the thick stem and mince the cap very fine. For dried mushrooms, rehydrate and cook until fully soft. Stay close during meals.

No piles

Spread pieces on the tray instead of heaping them in a bowl, so your child does not stuff a handful into the mouth.

Is wood ear mushroom a common allergen?

Wood ear is not a common allergen. Mushroom allergy is rare. Rashes and anaphylaxis have been reported in people who handle mushrooms. Mushrooms contain chitin, a carbohydrate found in shellfish and insects.

People with pollen food allergy, especially those sensitive to mold, may react to mushrooms too, usually with brief itching in the mouth. Cooking or canning lowers the reaction.

Dried wood ear may be preserved with sulfites. Sulfites are not a common allergen but can cause allergy-like reactions in people with asthma. On labels, look for names like sulfur dioxide and sodium metabisulfite.

First try

As with any new food, start with a small amount for the first few servings. If there is no reaction, increase it gradually.
