When can babies eat vinegar?
Vinegar can go into your baby's food in tiny amounts once they are ready for solids, at about 6 months. It forms when bacteria turn the sugar in a food or liquid into acid, giving a sharp, tangy taste.
Many foods can be the starting point. Balsamic, wine and raisin vinegars come from grapes, apple cider and persimmon vinegars from other fruit, and distilled, malt and rice vinegars from grains. The source changes both taste and nutrients.
Vinegar is usually eaten in small amounts. It contains amino acids, polyphenols and distinctive flavor compounds.
Check for honey
Some vinegars contain honey. Honey carries an infant botulism risk before 12 months. Read the label.
How do you prepare vinegar for babies?
A little, inside the dish
Vinegar is a flavoring for soups, sauces, marinades and salads, not a food in its own right. Its acidity can irritate the skin on the face or in the diaper area. Too much wears tooth enamel and upsets the stomach. Never give it to children as a home remedy, and never serve it alone in large amounts.
Some vinegars contain trace alcohol. The small amount in a dressing or a cooked dish is usually fine.
Vinegar drinks
Vinegar tonics and vinegar tea can come after the first birthday, only in small amounts, watered down, in an open cup. Undiluted or in excess, they can erode teeth and upset digestion.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to add to mealsmash
Add vinegar in small quantities, like you would in everyday cooking. Add it to marinades and sauces, drizzle a few drops over fruit and vegetables, or use it for pickling. Make sure the label lists no honey, because honey is off limits before 12 months. Also scan the ingredients for common allergens your baby has not yet tried.
12 months
12 months · How to use in dressings and mealsmash
Any kind of vinegar can stay in your cooking. Vinegar-based drinks come only after 12 months, well diluted, in small amounts, from an open cup. Never serve vinegar on its own or in large amounts.
Is vinegar a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Vinegar is a liquid and low risk. Prepare the food it goes into to suit your child's age.
Vinegar has a low choking risk. Prepare the dish it goes into to suit your child's age and stay close during meals.
Is vinegar a common allergen?
Vinegar seldom causes allergic reactions. Vinegars are often preserved with sulfites, though, and in sulfite-sensitive people these can trigger allergy-like reactions or asthma flares. Look for the words contains sulfites on the label. Added ingredients may also carry common allergens, so read the ingredient list.
Histamine is plentiful in vinegar by nature, and vinegar can also nudge white blood cells to release more. Sensitive children may get a rash or an upset stomach. If that happens, try a smaller amount.
Acidic foods can cause contact rashes on the face or diaper rash. Before the meal apply a light coat of barrier ointment, and wipe it off when the meal ends. For a diaper rash, use a thick barrier cream and avoid long contact with a wet diaper.
Sulfites
Sulfites occur naturally in many vinegars and are also added as a preservative. They are fine unless your child is sensitive. To avoid them, look for names such as sulfur dioxide, sodium metabisulfite and potassium metabisulfite.
