When can babies eat venison?

Venison can start once your baby is ready for solids, at about 6 months. In these months babies need a steady supply of iron, zinc, protein, and B vitamins, and this is particularly true of breastfed babies. Venison delivers all of these very well.

Among hunters, venison simply means deer meat. Strictly speaking it covers meat from the deer family (Cervidae), which includes elk and some antelope. Traditionally these are wild game animals taken by hunters, although deer and elk are now also raised on farms for sale.

Venison is a lean alternative to beef, high in protein and amino acids, and a source of B12, other B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper and selenium. The exact nutrition depends on whether the meat was farmed or wild.

Read the label

Ground venison is often mixed with fattier meats. Check the label if you want pure venison.

How do you prepare venison for babies?

Cooking

Venison is lean, so it overcooks and turns dry sooner than fatty cuts. To hold in the moisture, sear the meat in a very hot cast-iron skillet, then let it rest on a board before cutting. Serving it with applesauce, yogurt or a sauce helps swallowing.

Always cook ground meat and patties thoroughly. At this age bigger, firmer pieces are easier and safer for a baby to hold and suck on. A baby gets a fair share of the nutrients simply from sucking on a piece of the meat.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a mashmash

Stir cooked ground venison into a soft, scoopable food such as mashed potato, making sure no big clumps of meat remain. Lean meat dries out fast, so keep it moist. Sear it in a hot pan and let it rest before slicing.

6 months · How to cut and serve for baby-led weaningstrip

Cut: Finger strip

Offer well-done meat in strips about as thick as two adult fingers. At this age a larger, firmer piece is easier and safer for a baby to hold and suck on. Once your baby can tear off pieces, move on to patties.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as pattiescube

Make ground venison patties and serve them with applesauce or yogurt, since moisture helps swallowing. If your baby bites off too big a piece, try not to step in. Show them how to spit it out by sticking out your tongue and repeating a blah sound.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare minced and shreddedcube

Keep serving patties with applesauce, yogurt or mayonnaise. You can also try minced or shredded steak. Cooked ground meat can go on the plate alone, or be tossed with riced cauliflower, lentils or rice. By about 18 months, tiny razor-thin pieces of steak can give chewing practice. Thicken the slices slowly as skills grow.

Is venison a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Meat carries a choking risk. Mix ground meat into purée, or serve well-cooked strips or patties, never big chunks.

Meat is a common choking food, so it must be prepared for your child's age. Mix ground meat into purée, or give well-cooked strips or patties. Stay close in case a big piece comes loose in the mouth.

When a big piece breaks off

If your baby takes too big a piece, try not to step in. Show them how to spit it out by sticking out your tongue and making a blah sound. If breathing is blocked, begin choking first aid.

Is venison a common allergen?

Venison is not a common allergen, though in theory a person can be allergic to any food. When you first offer it, start with a small amount and watch your baby closely.
