When can babies eat trout?
Trout can start once your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. Farmed rainbow trout and steelhead are low in mercury and can be served 2 to 3 times a week. Skip lake trout for babies, since it can be high in mercury.
Trout is a good source of B12, protein and omega-3 fats, all of which help the brain grow. It also has vitamin D and selenium. These nutrients can be hard to get from other foods.
Trout is an oily fish of lakes, rivers and coastal waters, in the same family as salmon and char. Some is wild and some comes from farms.
Smoked and pickled trout
Smoked trout has more sodium than babies need, so wait until after the first birthday. Pickled trout is usually made with raw fish, so it can cause food poisoning. Avoid it for young children.
How do you prepare trout for babies?
Cooking and shape
Cook fresh or frozen trout to an internal temperature of 145 F (63 C). Canned, pickled and smoked trout do not suit this age. Remove the skin and every bone.
At 6 months you can offer strips about as thick as two adult fingers, or flake the fish into potato purée. Strips may fall apart in baby's hands, which is normal. After 9 months, move to bite-sized pieces, fish cakes or patties.
Choosing your fish
Mercury is a particular concern for babies. For trout caught by friends or family, check local fish advisories. Choose canned trout packed in BPA-free cans or in glass jars.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Shredded
Bake or steam the trout, remove the skin, and flake the flesh while checking for bones one by one with your fingers. Trout has many fine bones. Stir the flakes into potato or carrot purée. Fish is a new allergen, so offer it alone for the first time and in the morning.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Offer cooked, boneless trout in small flakes or bite-sized pieces. Smoked or salted trout is not suitable at this age.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Keep serving trout in small, boneless pieces. Set aside a lightly salted portion from baked or steamed trout, and keep checking for bones in every bite.
Is trout a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Bones in fresh fish are the main risk. Check for every bone with your fingers before serving.
Trout does not often cause choking. The real risk is the fine bones in fresh fish, and trout has many. Pick through cooked flesh with your fingers to find every bone. Stay close to your baby during meals.
Is trout a common allergen?
Fish is a common allergen. Roughly 0.2 percent of people around the world are allergic to fish. The rate is even lower in children than in adults. Most people with a fish allergy do not outgrow it, and some have their first reaction in adulthood.
About half of those allergic to one fish react to others, because most fish share the same protein. Fish can also trigger FPIES, a delayed allergy. Fish kept too warm can cause scombroid poisoning, which looks like an allergy.
First try
If you suspect a fish allergy, see an allergist first. Begin with a small amount and watch your baby. If all goes well, keep offering fish at regular intervals.

Frequently asked questions about trout
How often can babies eat trout?
Farmed rainbow trout and steelhead are low in mercury and can be served 2 to 3 times a week. Avoid lake trout.

Farmed trout usually has less mercury. Both are low-mercury fish, and both have an environmental cost. Choose the best option available to you.
When can babies have smoked trout?
After the first birthday and only occasionally, since it is high in sodium. Look for products with under 100 mg of sodium per serving.
What can I cook with trout?
Swap it in for salmon in your usual dishes, baked, steamed or poached. Flaked cooked trout can also stand in for tuna in fish cakes and salads.
