When can babies eat tomatillo?
Tomatillo can be offered once your baby seems ready for solids, usually at 6 months.
Tomatillo is native to Central and North America, where it also grows wild. It is a distant relative of the tomato and closer to the goldenberry. It grows inside a papery husk that is removed before eating. It stays green and firm even when ripe. It gives salsas, moles and tacos a tart, fresh taste.
Nutrition and storage
It is rich in fiber, fluid, potassium and vitamins B6, C and K. These support the gut microbiome and digestion, fluid and electrolyte balance, iron absorption, immunity and bone health. Fresh and canned both work. A ripe tomatillo is firm and bright green under the husk. It keeps about a day at room temperature. Fridge or freezer storage lasts longer.
How do you prepare tomatillo for babies?
Every baby develops at their own pace. These tips are general guidance.
Husk and wash it, then cook until tender. Fold it into soft foods, or turn it into a sauce or salsa. For large fruit, offer soft halves and quarters. After 12 months raw tomatillo can be served if your family eats it, but blend it into a sauce or chop it very fine.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · Cooked and stirred into soft foodmash
Husk and wash the tomatillo, chop it roughly and cook until soft. Stir the soft pieces into another spoonable food. Roasted tomatillos also make a sauce or salsa that you can spoon over food. Soft cooked halves or quarters work for tomatillos that are too large for baby's mouth.

9 months · Cooked quarterscube
Cut: Quartered
Quarter husked, cooked tomatillo and serve it alone or in a meal. Cooked pieces can be slippery. Roasted quarters are easier to grip thanks to ridges in the skin. You can also spoon roasted tomatillo sauce over eggs, meat or tacos.

12 months · Bites, wedges and saucescube
Serve husked, cooked tomatillo as bites or wedges. Your child can use the pincer grasp or practice with a fork. Salsas and sauces still work. If your family eats raw tomatillo, it can be served raw, but blend it into a sauce, chop it very fine or slice it thin.
Is tomatillo a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Raw or undercooked tomatillo is firm, slippery and sometimes small. Cook until soft, or blend or finely chop it if serving raw.
Raw or undercooked tomatillo is firm, slippery and sometimes small. These traits raise choking risk. Prepare it for your baby's age, cooked until soft. Stay close during meals and set up a safe space.
Is tomatillo a common allergen?
Tomatillo is not a common allergen. Allergy is rare, though cases have been reported. Far more common is a harmless rash around the mouth while eating, or a diaper rash from the acid. A rash after contact with acidic food is mostly skin irritation and seldom a true allergy. Ask your doctor about a thin layer of barrier cream on the face and diaper area before meals.
Start with a small amount for the first servings. If there is no reaction, increase slowly.
