When can babies eat thyme?

Thyme can start at about 6 months, once your baby is ready for solids.

Thyme is an evergreen shrub that grows around the Mediterranean. Today it grows in many parts of the world. Some kinds grow tall and bushy, others spread low, covered in small blooms of pink, purple or white. Its flavor is fresh and floral. It suits meat, sauces, soups, stews and vegetables.

Nutrition and safety

It has small amounts of vitamins, minerals and fiber. It also holds plant compounds such as thymol and carvacrol, plus phenols, flavonoids and carotenoids. These may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. It is generally considered safe in the amounts used in cooking. Do not give thyme essential oils to a baby. Their safety in children has not been studied enough.

How do you prepare thyme for babies?

Every baby develops at their own pace. These tips are general guidance.

Add thyme to food as finely chopped fresh leaves, dried or powdered. Remove woody stems before serving. After 12 months whole fresh leaves are fine.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · Finely chopped or driedmash

Cut: Finely chopped

Chop fresh thyme very finely and stir it into a vegetable dish or a meat sauce. If the stem is still tender, chop it with the leaves. If the stem is woody and tough, strip the leaves and use only those. Dried or powdered thyme also seasons food well.

12 months

12 months · In any formmash

Fresh, dried or powdered thyme can go into meals just as you cook with it normally. Whole fresh leaves are fine now. If you left a big woody sprig in the pot to flavor the dish, remove it before serving. A sprig that lands on your child's plate can cause discomfort or choking.

Is thyme a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Thyme is low risk. Take woody stems out of the dish, and chop the leaves finely until 12 months.

Thyme is low risk when prepared to suit your baby's age. Any food can still cause choking. Prepare it for your baby's age and stay close during meals.

Is thyme a common allergen?

Thyme is not a common allergen. Allergy is uncommon, but cases have been reported. If your child is sensitive to plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae), go carefully, as thyme is a close relative. These include basil, sage, marjoram, lavender, rosemary, oregano and mint.

Start with a small amount for the first servings. If there is no reaction, increase it slowly.
