When can babies eat sweet corn?

Cooked corn on the cob can start when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. As your baby gnaws the cob, the kernels get crushed. That changes their shape and lowers the choking risk. Loose kernels, on the other hand, can be a choking risk for babies under 12 months. They are small, firm and slippery.

Corn is native to Central and South America. It descends from a wild grass called teosinte.

Nutrition

Sweet corn supplies a lot of carbohydrate and fiber. It brings folate and zinc, along with B vitamins, vitamin C and phosphorus. It holds plant compounds that look after the eyes and antioxidants that help immunity.

How do you prepare sweet corn for babies?

Serve on the cob

Cut the cooked cob into rounds about 5 cm thick so your baby can hold one in a hand. You can also scrape off the kernels and serve just the cob. Less gets eaten, but it is good practice for chewing and the jaw muscles.

After 12 months

Offer loose kernels a few at a time at first. Do not let your child stuff the mouth with many. Once you trust how your child eats them, mix them into dishes. Canned baby corn is fine if cut lengthwise.

Corn in the stool

Corn skins can come out looking intact in the stool, and that is normal. The outer shell is cellulose, a fiber that is hard to digest. The inside is still absorbed. If you worry about your child's bowel habits, ask your pediatrician.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Boil the corn on the cob well. Leave the kernels on the cob and serve thick rounds or palm-length pieces. Your baby gnaws the cob with the gums and scrapes off the kernels. Do not serve loose kernels. If you use canned corn, choose the unsalted kind.

9 months

9 months · How to preparecube

Strip the boiled kernels from the cob and chop them roughly with a knife, or mash them with a fork and stir them into corn fritters, eggs or rice. The shell of a whole kernel is tough, so kernels are not served one by one without being crushed.

Keep serving chopped or lightly crushed boiled kernels inside dishes. You can try whole kernels in small amounts under supervision. Popcorn is not served before age 4.

Is sweet corn a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Loose kernels are small, round and sometimes firm. Before 12 months, serve them on the cob. Popcorn is not served before age 4.

Loose corn kernels are a choking risk. They are small, round and sometimes firm. Serving on the cob changes their shape and stops your baby from stuffing many kernels in the mouth at once. Sit with your baby at meals.

Cutting rule

No loose kernels before 12 months. At 6 months, cob rounds. At 9 months, crushed or chopped kernels. No popcorn before age 4.

Is sweet corn a common allergen?

Corn is not a common allergen. Allergy to corn is uncommon but has been reported. Symptoms range from brief itching in the mouth to anaphylaxis. Corn may also cause trouble for some people who are allergic to chitinase or to lipid transfer proteins. Cross-reactions between corn and other grains are possible, above all with wheat, rice, and barley. Most people with corn allergy can eat the other grains safely, and the reverse is also true.

Start with a small amount for the first few meals. If there is no reaction, raise it slowly.
