Sunchoke (Jerusalem artichoke), served for 6 months

When can babies eat sunchoke?

Sunchoke, also called Jerusalem artichoke, can be offered once your baby seems ready for solids, usually at 6 months. Its fiber naturally causes gas. Start small and increase as your baby tolerates it.

This tuberous plant is native to North America. It has no link to Jerusalem.

Nutrition

It is a very good source of iron and potassium. Choline, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin B6 come with it. It is high in a fiber named inulin, which is different from insulin. This fiber supports digestion and feeds helpful gut bacteria. Its leaves, stems and flowers are edible too.

How do you prepare sunchoke for babies?

Every baby develops at their own pace. These tips are general guidance.

Between 6 and 9 months, offer thick wedges cooked until soft. If your baby breaks off a big piece, stay calm. Babies at this age have reflexes that keep food forward and push it out if it is not chewed enough. If wedges worry you, mash them.

After 9 months, chop the cooked tuber into bites. If your baby overfills the mouth, you can show spitting by sticking out your tongue and saying "ah".

At 12 months and later, try raw tuber grated or sliced very thin. Cooked bites also suit practice with a fork and spoon. Fork use usually settles between 18 and 24 months.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

Cut: Thick wedge

Wash the tuber and cook it. Once soft, cut thick wedges your baby can grip. If your baby breaks off a large piece, stay calm and give time to work it forward. Start with a small amount, because its fiber can cause gas.

6 months · How to prepare mashedmash

Cut: Fork mashed

Mash the cooked tuber with a fork. Let your baby scoop it up by hand. If you like, add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar. Acid may ease gas a little.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as bitescube

Cut: Bite sized piece

Chop soft-cooked tuber into bite-sized pieces. Stuffing the mouth is normal at this age. Offer a few pieces rather than one at a time so your baby learns how much fits. If chopping worries you, go back to mash.

12 months

12 months · Thin slices or grated rawslice

Grate the raw tuber or slice it very thin. You can keep serving cooked bites by hand or with a fork. Peeled thin slices can be kept in vinegar in the fridge and offered as a tangy treat.

Is sunchoke a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Undercooked or raw tubers carry a choking risk. Either cook it until soft, or grate the raw root, or slice it thin.

Undercooked or raw sunchoke carries a choking risk. Shred the raw root or shave it into thin slices, or cook it until soft. Stay within arm's reach during meals and set up a safe eating space.

Hard pieces

Do not serve thick raw pieces.

Is sunchoke a common allergen?

Sunchoke is not a common allergen. Some cases have been reported. It can affect people who have birch pollen allergy or oral allergy syndrome. This brings a brief itch, tingle or burn inside the mouth. A dangerous reaction is not expected. Cooking can ease the reaction.

Start with a small amount for the first servings. If there is no reaction, increase it slowly.

Gas

Inulin makes gas when gut bacteria break it down. Some gas is normal. Too much upsets your baby. Cooking does not fix this. A little lemon juice or vinegar might help. Increase fiber-rich foods slowly and make sure your baby drinks enough fluid.
