When can babies eat strawberry?

Strawberries can be offered once your baby seems ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Not every strawberry suits a baby. Size and firmness decide it.

Each berry brings vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B6, folate, potassium and magnesium, plus fiber and water. Plant polyphenols act as antioxidants. Vitamin C helps the body absorb plant iron.

Varieties and flavor

Strawberries grow in temperate regions. Some are the size of a fingernail and some fill a palm. The color can be red, pink, purple or white. Some are sweet and some are sharp like pineapple. The difference depends on the variety, and on how the fruit was cultivated and when it was harvested.

How do you prepare strawberry for babies?

Every baby develops at their own pace. The tips below are general guidance.

Between 6 and 8 months you can offer one very large, very soft, ripe strawberry whole, stem removed. If the berry fits fully inside your baby's mouth, it is too small, so mash or cook it. To test softness, press it gently with your fingers. A berry that gives under light pressure is fine. A berry that needs a hard press is too firm.

Swap a chewed-down berry

If your baby has chewed the berry down to a size that worries you, take it away and offer a fresh, large one.

At 9 months, slices of medium thickness work well. Paper-thin slices are hard to pick up and stick to the tongue, which causes gagging. At 12 months, keep serving slices. When your toddler is ready, offer large berries whole or quartered.

You can also stir mashed berries into yogurt or warm oatmeal.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to cut and servestrip

Cut: Fork mashed

Never serve a strawberry whole or in halves. Its size and round shape can fit snugly into a small airway and cause choking. At 6 to 9 months, remove the stem and mash the berry well to a purée. If your baby is ready for baby-led weaning, serve it cut into quarters. Mash very small berries instead of quartering them.

6 months · How to prepare mashedmash

Cut: Fork mashed

Hull the berry and mash it with a fork. Mashing or briefly cooking small berries is the safest route. Stirring the mash into yogurt or warm oatmeal helps your baby eat more of it. Pick out any firm bits that remain.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as slicesslice

Cut a ripe strawberry into slices of medium thickness. Paper-thin slices are hard to pick up and can stick to the tongue or palate and trigger gagging. Keep the slices thick enough to hold easily. Stay beside your baby while they eat.

12 months

12 months · Quartered or large berriesslice

Keep serving slices. When your toddler seems ready, offer large berries whole or cut into quarters. The riper and softer the berry, the lower the risk. Still cut up or mash firm, small berries.

Is strawberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Firm, round or small strawberries can block the airway. Pick very large, soft, ripe berries, and mash or cook the small ones.

Strawberries carry a choking risk, especially when firm, round or small. Choose very large, soft, ripe berries. Prepare them to suit your baby's age. Stay within arm's reach and keep the eating space safe.

Difference from the in-app card

The 6 month card in the app says not to serve strawberries whole or halved. You can follow that more cautious card.

Is strawberry a common allergen?

Strawberry is not a common allergen. Allergenic proteins have still been found in the fruit. These proteins occur less in white strawberries.

A more frequent event is a harmless redness around the mouth caused by the fruit's acid. This is not an allergy. Eaten in large amounts, strawberries can also worsen diaper rash. If that happens, apply a thick barrier cream and limit contact with a wet diaper.

Children with birch pollen allergy may have oral allergy syndrome. Baby may feel a mild itch, tingle or burn in the mouth, which goes away without treatment. Heating the fruit can soften the reaction. Strawberry belongs to the rose family. People sensitive to almonds, apples or plums from the same family may react in a similar way.

Start with a small amount the first time and watch your baby's response.

Frequently asked questions about strawberry

Why are strawberries sometimes tart and sometimes sweet?

Flavor changes with the variety. Some are more acidic and others sweeter. The growing conditions and the harvest time shape the taste as well.

My baby's skin turned red around the mouth after strawberries. Is it an allergy?

Most often it is not. The fruit's acid can cause a short redness around the mouth. If lips or face swell, hives appear or breathing changes, get urgent help.

Can strawberries make diaper rash worse?

Acidic fruits such as strawberries can worsen diaper rash if eaten in large amounts. Apply a thick barrier cream and shorten contact with a wet diaper.
