When can babies eat semolina?
When can babies have semolina?
Semolina can be offered once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. It is a wheat allergen, so start with a small amount the first time.
What is semolina?
Semolina is a coarse flour milled from durum wheat, one of the hardest wheats. It is a staple in European, North African and South Asian cooking. Italy makes pasta from it, India makes halwa and upma, and North Africa makes couscous.
Nutrition
It gives B vitamins and complex carbohydrates, which support red blood cell production, energy metabolism and growth. It also has protein, iron and a little fiber.
How do you prepare semolina for babies?
Preparation basics
Cook porridge with breast milk, formula or water. If you have ruled out a dairy allergy you can use a little milk. Porridge made with honey is not served because of infant botulism risk.
Semolina is not gluten free. It is not safe for people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance or wheat allergy.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · Semolina porridgemash
Cook semolina with breast milk, formula or water into a porridge. If you have ruled out a dairy allergy, you can use a little milk. Baby can scoop it with hands or eat from a pre-loaded spoon. You can stir in mashed fruit, vegetables or cinnamon. Honey is never given before 12 months.
6 months · Noodles, large pasta, couscous in saucecube
You can serve noodles or large pasta shapes made from semolina. If you serve semolina couscous, mix it into a sauce or yogurt. The tiny grains are hard to scoop and scatter in the mouth.
9 months
9 months · Patties, pancakes, soft dumplingsstrip
Cut: Bite sized piece
Work semolina into patties, pancakes or soft dumplings and serve in bite-sized pieces. This supports the pincer grasp. Any size of semolina pasta your family likes works. Mix couscous into sauce or press it with the back of a fork so it clumps.
12 months
12 months · Porridge, bread, pasta, pudding, casserolecube
Alongside porridge, serve bread, pasta, pudding and grain casseroles made with semolina. A slightly thicker porridge clings to the spoon and helps self-feeding. Do not be discouraged by mess or by your child choosing hands. Steady spoon use usually settles after the second birthday.
Is semolina a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Low risk when prepared for the child's age. Tiny couscous grains can scatter in the mouth, so mix them into a sauce or yogurt.
Choking risk
Semolina carries a low risk when prepared for the child's age and development. Tiny couscous grains can scatter in the mouth. Stay within arm's reach during meals.
Is semolina a common allergen?
Allergen status
Semolina is made from wheat, and wheat is a common allergen. It is one of the most frequent food allergens in children. About two thirds of children outgrow it by age 12.
Celiac disease is a different condition from wheat allergy. Celiac disease needs a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet. A 'gluten allergy' is often a wrong label for celiac disease.
Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis is rare. Exercise within a few hours of eating wheat can set off a severe reaction. These people should skip wheat for four hours before strenuous activity.
People with pollen food allergy syndrome, especially grass pollen allergy, may be sensitive to wheat. Symptoms are short-lived itching, tingling or burning in the mouth, and sometimes belly pain, cramps, bloating or diarrhea. A dangerous reaction is unlikely.
If you suspect a wheat allergy, ask a pediatric health professional before serving it at home. Start with a small amount for the first few meals.
