When can babies eat salmon?
When can babies have salmon?
Salmon can be offered once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. Its mercury level is generally lower than in other fish. Salmon, close relatives of trout, inhabit the fresh and salt waters of the northern hemisphere. Most wild salmon spend their adult years at sea and return to the river of their birth to spawn. They are also raised on farms worldwide.
Nutrition
Besides protein and fat it provides iodine, iron, potassium, selenium and zinc. It also has vitamins A, B6, B12, D and folate. It carries omega-3 fatty acids including DHA, which supports vision and cognitive development.
How do you prepare salmon for babies?
Preparation basics
Cook the fish thoroughly. Remove all bones and skin. Finned fish share the same main protein, so rotating species by availability is fine.
Canned salmon suits any baby who is ready for solids. If you want less salt, drain and rinse it, though this is not required. Fully cooked smoked salmon can be tasted occasionally. Products that are not fully cooked, such as cold-smoked salmon, carry a risk of foodborne illness for babies. All smoked types are salty. Raw salmon and sushi are never completely safe at any age, and infections such as salmonellosis and vibriosis are harder on babies. Cooking finned fish to an internal 145 F (63 C) helps kill bacteria.
Raw or undercooked salmon
Raw salmon, sushi and cold-smoked salmon are not advised for babies. The risk decision is yours.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to prepare as a puréemash
Cut: Shredded
Steam or bake the salmon. Go over every part with your fingers to check for bones one by one, because small bones are easy to miss. Flake the cooked flesh with a fork and loosen it to a soft texture with breast milk. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain development. It is a new allergen, so introduce it alone, early in the day and in a small amount the first time.
6 months · Boneless, skinless stripsstrip
Remove every bone and all skin from freshly cooked salmon. Offer strips about as thick as two adult fingers, or flake it into soft, spoonable foods. Canned salmon can be stirred into mashed potato or yogurt. Soft fish cakes bigger than baby's mouth also work.

9 months · Bite-sized pieces and pattiescube
Cut: Bite sized piece
Offer bite-sized pieces of boneless, skinless fresh or canned salmon. Fish patties and salmon salad also suit this age. For salad, mix flaked salmon with mashed avocado, olive oil or yogurt. Long strips are still fine for practicing biting and tearing.
12 months
12 months · Longer strips and biting practicestrip
Serve boneless cooked salmon as longer strips, bite-sized pieces or patties. It is a good food for fork practice. Fully cooked smoked salmon can be given occasionally in moderation, mindful of the salt.
Is salmon a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
A bone left in a freshly cooked fillet is a choking risk. Remove all bones and skin, and check the flesh by pressing with your fingers.
Choking risk
Salmon itself is not a choking food. Even so, any bones remaining after fish is freshly cooked can cause choking. Remove every bone, prepare for the child's age and stay close during meals.
Is salmon a common allergen?
Allergen status
Finned fish are counted as a common allergen. Salmon is among the most frequent culprits, together with cod, halibut and tuna. Worldwide, an estimated 0.2 percent are allergic to finned fish, and children are affected even less than adults. About 40 percent of people with fish allergy have their first reaction in adulthood. Most do not outgrow it.
Some people also react to proteins released into the air while fish cooks. About half of those allergic to one finned fish react to another, because beta-parvalbumin is in most fish. Allergists often advise people allergic to one species to avoid all finned fish until they have been seen.
Fish is a known FPIES trigger. Repeated vomiting and diarrhea start hours after eating. Fish FPIES can appear later in life and often lasts a lifetime. Fish that was not kept cold builds up histamine and causes scombroid poisoning. It is mistaken for allergy but is not one.
If you suspect fish allergy, ask an allergist before giving salmon. Start with a small amount. After a successful introduction, keep it in the diet, ideally twice a week.

Frequently asked questions about salmon
Is salmon safe regarding mercury?
Salmon is generally low in mercury, though it varies with where the fish lived and what it ate. Serve it as part of a balanced diet and, where possible, choose low-mercury fish like salmon and sardines.
Is wild salmon better than farmed?
Neither is better. Wild Alaskan salmon may have more omega-3 but slightly more ocean contaminants. Farmed salmon is easier to find and more affordable.
How often can babies eat salmon?
A few times a week is fine. Do not worry about exact amounts. Within a varied diet a baby may eat a lot or a little at one meal.
