When can babies eat saffron?

When can babies have saffron?

Saffron can be offered once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. A pinch is enough for flavor and color. It consists of the stigmas of the crocus flower, which are thin and look like threads. It is a spice native to Southwest Asia. Many flowers are needed for a small amount and all are picked by hand, so it is expensive. It features in French, Iranian, Indian, Spanish, North African and Mediterranean dishes.

Nutrition

It contains antioxidants such as crocin, safranal and kaempferol. These support immune health and protect cells from oxidative damage.

No supplements

Do not give saffron supplements to babies and toddlers. Safety research is limited.

How do you prepare saffron for babies?

Preparation basics

Steep one or two threads in hot water, breast milk or another liquid, or grind them. Add to soft foods, sauces or porridge. Too much overpowers the dish.

Save saffron milk as a regular drink for after the first birthday, so that it does not take the place of breast milk or formula. Saffron milk is fine when used in cooking solid food.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · Dissolve 1-2 strands into soft foodsmash

Steep one or two saffron threads in a little warm water or breast milk until they release their color. The threads can also be ground to a dry powder. Mix the liquid or powder through mashed potato, rice, yogurt or cooked lentils. You can also infuse a sauce or porridge. The flavor is strong, so keep the amount very small.

Cut: Ground

A pinch, which means one or two threads, can be dissolved in liquid or ground to powder. Stir it into porridge, pudding, rice, or stew. Beverages like saffron milk are possible now too, in small amounts.

Is saffron a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Dissolved or ground saffron carries a low risk. Do not leave the raw threads whole.

Choking risk

Saffron prepared for the child's age carries a low risk. Dissolve or grind the threads. Stay within arm's reach during meals.

Is saffron a common allergen?

Allergen status

Saffron allergy is rare. Reported cases are usually linked to high doses or workplace exposure. Many spices can bring on allergy-like reactions even in people without an allergy. Breathing in powdered saffron can irritate the nose and trigger sneezing and coughing. Some spices irritate the skin around the mouth.

Ask your pediatrician about applying a thin layer of protective cream to baby's face before meals. Spice blends with saffron may contain common allergens. Read the label.
