When can babies eat rosemary?
When can babies have rosemary?
Rosemary can be used as a flavoring once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. It comes from the Mediterranean region and still grows wild on dry, hilly ground there. The herb tastes peppery and smells strongly of evergreen, which fits sweet and savory cooking alike.
Oils, extracts, teas and concentrated powders
Rosemary essential oil, extracts, teas and concentrated powders are not for babies. Their safety is not well studied and there are reports of serious illness.
Nutrition
Rosemary has small amounts of various vitamins, minerals and fiber. It carries plant compounds such as rosmarinic and carnosic acid, polyphenols and terpenes. These may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.
How do you prepare rosemary for babies?
Preparation basics
Amounts typically used in cooking are generally regarded as safe. Chop fresh rosemary finely and set tough twigs aside. Take any sprig that cooked in the dish out before serving.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · Chop finely and add to sauces or dishesmash
Cut: Finely chopped
Chop fresh rosemary very finely and add it to a sauce for cooked vegetables or meat. A tender stem can be chopped up together with the leaves. A woody, hard stem should be removed, so strip the leaves off first. Dried or ground rosemary can also season the food. Do not use essential oil, extracts or tea.
12 months
12 months · Any form, including whole leavescube
Use fresh, dried or ground rosemary as you normally would. Whole fresh leaves are fine. If you cooked with a large, woody sprig for flavor, take it out before serving. This lowers the risk of discomfort and choking.
Is rosemary a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Finely chopped rosemary carries a low risk. If you cooked with a woody, tough sprig, take it out before serving.
Choking risk
Rosemary carries a low risk when prepared for the child's age. Always remove woody stems. Stay within arm's reach during meals.
Is rosemary a common allergen?
Allergen status
Allergy to rosemary is uncommon, although some cases are on record. Be careful if your child is sensitive to plants in the mint family such as mint, thyme, marjoram, basil, lavender or sage. These plants are close relatives of rosemary. Use only a tiny amount the first few times.
