When can babies eat rice?
When can babies have rice?
Rice can be offered once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. It is native to Asia, and almost half the world now relies on it as a staple. There are more than 100,000 varieties, such as Arborio, basmati and sticky rice.
Nutrition
Rice is a good carbohydrate source that gives quick energy. Enriched white rice provides folate and a little iron. Brown and other whole-grain types hold more protein, vitamins and minerals.
How do you prepare rice for babies?
Preparation basics
Loose grains can scatter in the mouth. Mashing the rice or binding it with liquid such as broth or sauce helps. If you serve infant rice cereal often, rotate it with oat or multigrain cereals to lower arsenic exposure.
If you offer a thin puffed rice cake, spread a thin layer of bean dip or avocado on it. Avoid thick puffed rice cakes and rice crackers.
About arsenic
Rice takes up arsenic from the water and soil where it grows. The amount depends on region and processing. White, polished rice usually has less arsenic because it concentrates in the outer layer. Organic rice is not necessarily lower. Serving rice as one of many foods is not a concern. Rotate it with grains such as bulgur, barley, corn, millet and quinoa.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · Make it scoopable with liquidmash
Stir moist cooked rice into a sauce or other liquid so it can be scooped. Another way to get a thick porridge is to cook rice in coconut milk, broth, or some other liquid. Let baby scoop with hands or grab a pre-loaded spoon.
6 months · Large soft rice ballsstrip
Cut: Large piece
Form cooked rice into large, soft balls or sticky pieces that fit baby's palm. Chopped rice noodles also work as an introduction. Wait on thick, springy rice cakes such as mochi, nian gao and tteok.
9 months
9 months · Sticky, moist ricecube
Serve moist cooked rice plain or inside a meal. A light press with a fork makes the grains stick together, so baby can feed themselves more easily. Onigiri, arancini and patties are good formats.
12 months
12 months · Rice as part of the mealcube
Serve rice alone or as part of the family meal. Offer an age-appropriate fork or training chopsticks and pre-load them if needed. Your child may keep using hands. Slightly moister, stickier rice is easier to eat with utensils.
Is rice a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Cooked rice carries a low risk. Loose grains can scatter in the mouth and cause gagging. Sticky rice cakes such as mochi are high risk.
Choking risk
Cooked rice grains carry a low risk when prepared for the child's age. Thick, sticky steamed rice cakes such as mochi cause many choking incidents in certain parts of the world. Wait until age 3, then cut them lengthwise into quarters and serve with the child seated and supervised.
Sticky rice cakes
Mochi, nian gao and tteok are a high choking risk for young children.
Is rice a common allergen?
Allergen status
Rice rarely causes an IgE-mediated allergy. Rice can, though, set off FPIES (food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome). This is a non-IgE food allergy, and it may be severe and even endanger life.
Symptoms begin hours after eating. Vomiting usually follows in 1 to 4 hours and diarrhea in 5 to 10 hours. Blood pressure and body temperature can fall, the skin can turn very pale, vomiting can repeat and the body can lose a lot of fluid. Most cases settle in toddlerhood. Children diagnosed with FPIES need follow-up with an allergist or pediatric gastroenterologist. If your baby already has FPIES to another food, ask your specialist how to introduce new solids.

Frequently asked questions about rice
Is brown or white rice better?
Both can be part of a balanced diet. Brown rice has more vitamins and minerals but can also have more arsenic. White rice has less arsenic and fewer nutrients. Variety matters most.
Which infant cereal is best?
Iron-fortified oat or multigrain cereal helps lower arsenic exposure compared with rice cereal. Starting solids with infant cereal is not required.
Which grains can replace rice?
Grains such as amaranth, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, corn, millet and quinoa usually have less arsenic than rice. It varies by region.
