When can babies eat ramps?

What are ramps, and when can babies have them?

Ramps can be offered from 6 months. They grow wild and are gathered in the highland forests of Canada, the Appalachians and the northern United States. They belong to the same plant family as onions, leeks and garlic. Some people call them wild leeks or wild garlic. Careful foragers cut only the leaves and leave the bulb in the soil.

Nutrition

Nutrition data on ramps is limited. They are expected to resemble leeks and scallions, which provide fiber, water, folate, magnesium, potassium and vitamins A, C and K. The compounds that give alliums their smell have antioxidant properties.

How do you prepare ramps for babies?

Preparation basics

In the early months cook ramps and chop them very finely. Ramp butter uses them raw, so the flavor is strong. Start small. As baby grows, you can offer cooked pieces alone. Every child develops differently, so treat these tips as general guidance.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · Fold into finger foodsstrip

Cut: Finely chopped

Cook ramps until soft and chop them very finely. Mix into finger foods such as strips of egg or big soft meatballs. Blend them with softened butter to get ramp butter, then spread it over strips of toast. The ramps stay raw in the butter, so the onion taste is stronger. Start with a small amount.

9 months · Small cooked piecescube

Cut: Finely chopped

Offer cooked, chopped ramp pieces on their own. Baby practices picking them up with the fingertips. Some spitting at first is normal and helps baby get used to the taste and texture. Keep using finely chopped ramps in sauces and shared meals.

12 months

12 months and up · Chopped, cooked or rawcube

Add chopped ramps to meals, cooked or raw. As molars arrive and chewing improves, from about 18 months, you can serve larger pieces of cooked ramps so your child can practice biting and tearing.

Is ramps a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Well-cooked, finely chopped ramps carry a low risk. Chop to suit your child's age and stay close during the meal.

Choking risk

Well-cooked ramps carry a low risk. Any food can in theory cause choking, though. Chop to suit your child's age and stay within arm's reach during meals.

Is ramps a common allergen?

Allergen status

Ramps are not a common allergen. There is some evidence that allergy to onion-family plants is rising. Heat breaks down some of the allergy-causing proteins in these plants, so thoroughly cooked ramps may be tolerated by someone who reacts to raw ones.

In people with pollen food allergy syndrome, especially grass or mugwort pollen sensitivity, the mouth may itch or burn briefly. Start with a small amount the first few times.
