When can babies eat pumpkin seed?

Pumpkin seed can be offered once baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. The seed must be finely ground, or made into smooth butter and thinned.

Pumpkins come from Central America. The seed has a mild taste that deepens when roasted. One pumpkin type has small, moss-green seeds with no shell. They are slightly softer compared with many seeds and nuts.

Nutrition

The seed and its butter both supply a good amount of fiber, protein and fat. They also carry iron, magnesium, zinc and antioxidants. These nutrients supply the building blocks for growth, development and energy. They also help digestion run smoothly, and aid healthy blood, mineral balance, sense of taste and defenses against infection.

How do you prepare pumpkin seed for babies?

Use only the shell-less green seeds (pepitas). With no food processor, wrap the seeds in a cloth and crush them with a mortar or hammer.

At 6 months give a fine powder or butter thinned well. At 12 months butter can go unthinned but only as a thin layer. After 24 months a child with molars and good chewing skills can try whole shell-less seeds. Start with a single seed, with the child seated and focused. Show how by putting a seed on your own back teeth and chewing slowly and widely.

White-shelled seeds

Seeds from decorative and pie pumpkins are edible, but they wear an off-white hull that is very hard to chew. Offer these only once the child can grind firm food with molars and has plenty of experience with hard textures, usually after age 2. Give one at a time.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to prepare as a puréemash

Cut: Ground

Grind shell-less green pumpkin seeds (pepitas) in a food processor to a powder with no big pieces left. Sprinkle over yogurt, rice, quinoa, mashed squash or warm porridge. Coat slippery foods such as fruit slices in the powder so baby grips them better. If you use butter, pick a smooth one with no honey. Loosen it well using applesauce, formula, breast milk or water. An open cup of water alongside helps baby swallow sticky bits.

12 months

12 months · How to servemash

Cut: Ground

Sprinkle finely ground shell-less seeds on yogurt, porridge and other spoon foods. At this age the butter can go without thinning first. Still spread it very thin on other food or mix it in well, with no clumps. Do not give a spoonful of butter alone. Thick butter is sticky and a small child cannot manage it in the mouth.

Is pumpkin seed a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Pumpkin seeds are small, hard and slippery, and the butter turns sticky. Give baby finely ground seed or thinned butter. Whole seeds come only after 24 months.

The seeds are tiny, hard and smooth, and the butter gets sticky and hard to handle in the mouth. These traits raise choking risk.

For babies give only a fine powder or thinned butter. Do not give whole seeds. Serve while the child is seated and calm, and stay beside the child during meals.

Whole seeds

No whole seeds before 24 months. No plain spoonful of butter either.

Is pumpkin seed a common allergen?

Pumpkin seed is not a common allergen. Pumpkin seed allergy is rare. It does not belong to the tree nut group.

Give a small amount at the first servings. If there is no reaction, raise it slowly.
