When can babies eat potato?
Potato can be offered once baby is ready for solids, around 6 months.
Potato is native to South America. Today it is a staple food worldwide. There are thousands of varieties, each with its own color, shape and taste.
Nutrition
Potato is a strong energy source for a growing baby. Folate, iron, zinc, and vitamin B6 are in it. It also brings vitamin C and choline, which matters for brain development. The resistant starch in potato helps friendly gut bacteria grow.
How do you prepare potato for babies?
Cook the potato through. Boiling or baking works. It should squash easily between two fingers.
At 6 months baby can handle thick wedges or purée. From 9 months baby practices on small cubes. Mashed potato holds foods that are tricky to scoop, and it keeps things less messy.
Sprouted potatoes
Throw out sprouted potatoes. Peel or carve out any green or dark "eyes". Sprouted potatoes hold more solanine, a natural toxin that is harmful in large amounts. Cooking at high heat cuts the solanine level notably.
Solanine
Do not give sprouted or greened potatoes to a baby.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Thick wedge
Cook the potato through. It is ready when it squashes easily between two fingers. Hand baby thick wedges that fit a fist. You do not have to peel it. If you go with a spoon, make a purée and loosen it with breast milk, formula or whole milk, then drizzle a teaspoon of olive oil on top. Do not use sprouted potatoes.
9 months
9 months · How to cut and servecube
Cut: Bite sized piece
Serve cooked potato in bite-sized cubes. Baby practices the pincer grasp with these pieces. The skin can stay on. It is normal for baby to chew and spit out the skin. Larger wedges and purée can still be offered.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Give small potato pieces to eat by finger or fork. Pre-load the fork and set it beside the plate for your child to pick up. If your child prefers hands, do not push. Steady fork use usually settles after age two.
Is potato a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Cooked potato is low risk. Still cook it fully so it squashes easily between two fingers. If you give a whole potato, it must be clearly bigger than baby's mouth.
Cooked potato is low risk when prepared to suit the child's age. In theory any food can cause choking.
Cook the potato through and cut it for the age. If you give a whole potato, make it clearly larger than baby's mouth yet small enough for baby to hold. Stay beside baby during meals.
Is potato a common allergen?
Potato is not a common allergen. Potato allergy is uncommon but known. Potato may affect babies with eczema or other food allergies more easily. People with oral allergy syndrome may react, mainly if they eat the skin or the potato is raw or undercooked. Those allergic to birch, grass and mugwort pollen are more sensitive. This syndrome gives brief mouth itching.
A severe reaction (anaphylaxis) to cooked potato is rare. There are isolated reports of hives or rash after touching raw potato. Some people with natural rubber latex allergy develop a cross-allergy to potato.
Give a small amount at the first servings. If there is no reaction, raise it slowly.

Should I peel the potato?
It is not required. The skin can stay on. Baby may chew and spit it out, which is normal and builds familiarity with skin.

No. Discard sprouted or greened potatoes. They hold solanine.
How can I make mashed potato richer?
Stir in breast milk, formula or whole milk. Drizzle a little healthy oil on top.

In most children after 24 months. Eating by hand is also a healthy stage. Do not pressure.
