When can babies eat pomelo?
Pomelo can be offered once baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. It must be free of membranes and seeds.
Pomelo comes from Southeast Asia. It is the largest citrus fruit and a parent of many citrus types, including bitter and sweet orange. It is not common in Turkey. It resembles grapefruit but is sweeter and less bitter.
Babies on medication
Pomelo holds compounds that interact badly with some medicines. If your baby takes medication, ask the pediatrician before offering pomelo.
Nutrition
Pomelo is rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C supports immunity and helps absorb iron from plant foods. It also provides fiber, B vitamins and plenty of potassium. Like other citrus, it supplies antioxidants.
Storage tip: Pomelo is over 75 percent water. Keep it in the fridge and eat it within a few days.
How do you prepare pomelo for babies?
Separate the fruit into segments, peel the membrane off each one and remove every seed. Only soft flesh should remain.
If the acid touches skin, a harmless rash can appear. You can apply a barrier ointment to the face and diaper area before the meal. Too much fruit can worsen diaper rash.
Juice
Babies do not get juice. After the first birthday a small amount, ideally diluted, is possible. We suggest waiting until age two.
Sweet drinks shrink the variety of foods, raise the risk of cavities and change appetite.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to cut and serve for baby-led weaningstrip
Cut: Thick wedge
Strip away the peel, the white pith, the membranes and every seed. Hand baby the large pieces of flesh that remain. If baby bites off a big piece, stay calm and keep your finger out of the mouth. Let baby work it out alone.
9 months
9 months · How to cut and servecube
Serve the membrane-free, seedless flesh as thin slices or bite-sized pieces. This size trains the pincer grasp between thumb and forefinger.
12 months
12 months · How to serveslice
Keep offering thin, seedless, membrane-free slices or small pieces. Pre-load small pieces on a fork or spoon for practice. Tossing the fruit into a salad together can draw picky eaters toward the food.
Is pomelo a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Segments left in their membrane and seeds are hazards. Cut the flesh free of the membrane and remove all seeds.
Citrus segments are a choking hazard when served inside their membrane. Seeds can also be inhaled into the lungs.
Pomelo membrane is thick and fibrous. Free every segment from it completely. Stay beside baby during meals.
Safe cutting
No peel, pith, membrane or seeds. Large segments at 6 months, thin slices or small pieces at 9 months.
Is pomelo a common allergen?
Pomelo is not a common allergen. Even so, sensitivity to citrus is often reported. People with oral allergy syndrome, and people allergic to grass or tree pollen, may react to citrus more. The syndrome brings a short spell of tingling, itching or burning inside the mouth. A dangerous reaction is not expected.
Skin reactions
Pomelo peel contains a compound called limonene. Limonene can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive people. If the juice stays on skin unwashed and the skin meets sun, phytophotodermatitis can follow. It is an itchy, pigmented and sometimes blistering rash. Rinsing skin that met citrus, then shielding it from sun, prevents it.
Offer a small amount at the first servings. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly.

Frequently asked questions about pomelo
Is pomelo the same as grapefruit?
No. They are related. Pomelo is larger, sweeter and less bitter. Grapefruit is known as a cross between pomelo and another citrus. The medication warning applies to both.
My baby takes medicine. Can I give pomelo?
Ask your pediatrician or a pediatric dietitian first. Pomelo can change how some medicines work.
Can I give pomelo juice?
No. Babies do not get juice. After one year, only a small diluted amount is possible.
Does pomelo help with constipation?
It carries fluid and fiber, which can help soften stool. If you stay worried, talk to your pediatrician.
