When can babies eat plum?
Plum can be offered at around 6 months, as long as it is very ripe and soft or cooked until soft. Dried plum (prune) works at the same age once softened.
The plum grows wild across North America, Europe and Asia. There are thousands of varieties. Some are very sweet, some sour and some astringent.
Nutrition
Plum provides carbohydrates, fiber and fluid. It also contains vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium. These support energy, digestion and fluid balance.
Plum is one of the fruits that can help babies who struggle with constipation.
How do you prepare plum for babies?
Always serve plum without the pit. Gentle pressure between thumb and forefinger should be enough to mash the fruit. The skin helps baby grip the slippery flesh. Peel it if the skin worries you.
Plum is very slippery. Small pieces can be hard for baby to pick up. Thin slices or a pitted half are easier.
If baby bites off a large piece, stay calm and keep your finger out of their mouth. Kneel in front of baby and encourage them to look down. Gravity helps the piece come out.
Cooked plum
If the plum is firm, cook it until soft or mash it. Raw, hard plum is not suitable for babies.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Remove the pit from a ripe, soft plum. Serve a half with the skin on as a palm-sized piece, or peel it, mash it with a fork and stir it into yogurt. Do not serve hard, sour plums unless they are mashed.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Peel a pitted ripe plum and cut it into small pieces. Green, hard plums (can eriği) are not suitable at this age. Offer only soft, ripe plum. Rolling slippery pieces in a little ground seed can add grip.

Cut: Quartered
Pit ripe plums and serve them in quarters, skin on if you like. Whole plums and pits wait until age 4. You can soften dried plums (prunes) and cut them small. They can help with constipation.
Is plum a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
The pit and a whole small plum are choking risks. Remove the pit and quarter ripe, soft plums. Do not offer hard green plums.
Plum carries a choking risk. An underripe plum is both slippery and firm, and that combination raises the risk. The pit is also a serious blockage hazard.
Stay beside baby during meals, within arm's reach.
Safe cutting
Remove the pit. Serve halves or mash at 6 months, thin slices or small pieces at 9 months and quarters at 12 months. Whole plums and pits wait until age 4.
Is plum a common allergen?
Plum is not a common allergen. Reports of severe allergic reactions to plum exist, however. People with a history of strong reactions to cherry, peach or nectarine may carry a higher risk. Latex allergy can also raise the risk.
Plum can also trigger a reaction in people allergic to birch pollen. People with oral allergy syndrome to other foods from the rose (stone fruit) family are affected in the same way. This syndrome brings brief itching, tingling or a burning feeling in the mouth. A dangerous reaction is unlikely. Cooking and peeling the fruit can reduce the reaction.
Begin with a tiny portion at the first meals. If baby does fine, increase it step by step.

Frequently asked questions about plum
Does plum help with constipation?
Plum is one of the fruits that can help babies with constipation. If it continues, talk to your pediatrician.
Should I peel the skin?
It is not required. Baby can hold the slippery fruit more easily with the skin on. You may peel it if it worries you.
When can a child have a whole plum?
A whole plum is risky for young children. The source suggests trying after 18 months while eating one together and showing the pit. We stay on the safe side and suggest age 4.
What if baby puts a pit in their mouth?
Stay calm. A pit can trigger the gag reflex and move forward. Keep a hand under the chin and ask baby to spit it out.
