When can babies eat pinto beans?

You can offer pinto beans once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Always cook them thoroughly.

Pinto means painted in Spanish. The name points to the mottled skin, with spots from beige to black, pink, purple and red. The bean is native to Central America.

The beans are full of carbohydrates, fiber, and protein. They also offer iron and zinc, calcium and potassium, choline, folate, and selenium, and it provides vitamin E, vitamin K, and vitamin B6. These support energy, growth, gut bacteria, bone density, the nervous system, red blood cells, electrolyte balance, immunity and taste.

How do you prepare pinto beans for babies?

Iron absorption

Pair the beans with something high in vitamin C and your baby takes up more of the iron.

Lectins and anti-nutrients

Soaking and cooking reduce natural plant compounds, among them lectins, oxalates, and phytates. Within a balanced diet, most people are not harmed by them. So always soak the beans and cook them thoroughly, and never serve them raw or undercooked.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a mash or pastemash

Crush or purée fully cooked pinto beans until the result is either chunky or silky, so your baby can scoop it up. Offer it on a spoon, or smear a thin layer on half a soft corn tortilla or a slice of toast. Loosen it with breast milk, formula, olive oil, avocado or yogurt if you like. You can also mix it into soft foods such as corn porridge, vegetable purée or rice porridge. Beans can cause gas and get the bowels moving, so begin with a few spoonfuls per meal.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as flattened beanscube

Cut: Flattened

For a baby starting to pick up food with two fingers, offer cooked beans that you have pressed lightly flat with your thumb and finger first. You can keep serving the mash too. Let your baby scoop by hand, dip fingers or cooked vegetable pieces, or practice with a spoon.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare as whole cooked beanscube

At this age your child can chew and swallow well-cooked whole pinto beans. Offer dishes you can eat together, such as bean salad, soup and stew. Show how to pick up a bean with a fork. If your child refuses the fork, do not worry. Many children switch between hands and fork. Steady fork use may come after 24 months.

Is pinto beans a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Pinto beans are small, round and firm when raw or undercooked. Cook them thoroughly and mash at 6 months, gently flatten at 9 months.

Pinto beans are small and round, and hard if raw or not cooked enough. Both traits raise the choking risk.

Prepare the beans to suit your baby's age: mash at 6 months, gently flatten at 9 months, and serve well-cooked whole beans after 12 months. Stay close while your baby eats and keep them upright.

Is pinto beans a common allergen?

Pinto beans rarely cause allergy. Some people allergic to other legumes, peanut and soy among them, have reacted to beans. Being allergic to one legume does not mean allergy to all, and most people with peanut or soy allergy eat other legumes without trouble. People with birch or grass pollen allergy or oral allergy syndrome can react to legumes like pinto beans. The mouth itches, tingles or burns briefly, which is not dangerous.

Give a small amount the first few times. If there is no reaction, increase the portion.
