When can babies eat peach?

Peach can be offered once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Pick fruit that is very ripe and soft, or cook it until tender.

Peach is a fruit native to East Asia. Today it grows in temperate regions worldwide. It is a symbol of summer. The nectarine is its smooth-skinned relative.

Peach gives carbohydrates, fiber and fluid. It adds potassium too, along with vitamins K, E, C and A. These support energy, digestion, fluid balance, skin, eyesight, immunity and blood clotting. It is one of the fruits that can help with constipation.

How do you prepare peach for babies?

Ripeness and skin

Peach should squash when pressed lightly between your fingers. On a ripe peach, leaving the skin on helps your baby grip the slippery fruit. If the skin worries you, peel the fruit and coat the half in grated coconut or finely ground seeds.

If a big bite happens

If your baby bites off a large piece, stay calm and keep your fingers out of the mouth. Kneel in front of your baby, encourage them to look down, and let gravity help the food come out.

Juice

No juice as a drink before 12 months. Waiting until after age 2 for regular juice is better. Regular juice raises the risk of cavities and can reduce appetite for meals.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Finger strip

Always peel the skin: the fuzzy surface bothers the mouth and thin bits of skin can pose a choking risk. Remove the pit and cut the ripe, soft flesh into finger-thick slices. Fresh, ripe peach in season (summer) has a safer texture than syrup-canned kinds and has no added sugar.

6 months · How to prepare as a mashmash

Cut: Fork mashed

Peel and pit a very ripe peach and mash it. Mix it into oatmeal or yogurt, which are soft and simple to scoop. The fruit should squash easily under light finger pressure.

9 months

Cut: Thin slice

Serve soft, ripe peach in thin slices. The slices should squash easily. If your baby cannot grab slices yet, keep offering peeled, pitted peach halves. You can roll slippery small pieces in grated coconut or finely ground seeds.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare as small piecescube

Cut: Bite sized piece

Cut ripe peach into bite-size pieces and pre-load them on a fork. Thin slices or pitted halves keep biting practice going. After 18 months, if your child chews well and you feel comfortable, you can try a whole peach, showing the pit and eating one alongside.

Is peach a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Peaches, especially underripe ones, can be slippery and firm, which raises choking risk. Choose very ripe, soft fruit and remove the pit.

Peach carries a choking risk. Underripe fruit in particular is slippery and firm, which raises the risk.

Prepare the fruit to suit your baby's age. A pit cannot be swallowed, so always remove it. If a toddler gets a pit in the mouth by accident, do not panic. A pit tends to set off a strong gag reflex that pushes it out. In a calm voice ask your child to spit it out, explain that pits are not food, and cup a hand under the chin. Stay close while your baby eats and keep them upright.

Is peach a common allergen?

Peach is not a common allergen. Peach allergy is uncommon. People with oral allergy syndrome, especially those sensitive to birch or certain grass pollens, may react to peach. People sensitive to other fruits in the rose family, such as apricot, almond, nectarine and plum, may react the same way.

This syndrome only makes the mouth itch, tingle or sting for a short while, and it is not dangerous. Cooked, canned or peeled peach can reduce or remove the reaction.

Give a small amount on its own the first few times. If there is no reaction, increase the portion.
