Iron-rich lean meat · cook well
When can babies eat ostrich meat?
Ostrich can be offered once baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. At this stage babies, especially breastfed ones, need iron, protein and zinc regularly. Ostrich provides all of them.
Ostrich counts as red meat, and it is lean. Its color, taste and texture resemble beef, with more iron and less fat. This big bird is native to Africa, and people there commonly eat it for protein. Protein content matches bison and grass-fed beef. Compared with regular beef, it has close to double the vitamin B12, and notably more iron, selenium, and other B vitamins. Zinc is a little lower than in beef, but still excellent.
How do you prepare ostrich meat for babies?
Cook ostrich well. Ground products need an inside temperature of 160 F (71 C), since mince carries a risk of foodborne illness.
Trim off gristle. Serve patties with applesauce, yogurt or another moist food, which makes swallowing easier.
Ostrich meat is pricey and not in every store. You can find frozen meat from specialty sellers or farms.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to prepare as stripsstrip
Cut: Finger strip
Cut well-done ostrich into strips as long and thick as two adult fingers. Here, a larger and tougher piece is simpler and safer for baby to handle. Trim off loose gristle and hand over a whole strip. Baby gets a fair amount of nutrition just by sucking on it. Once baby starts tearing off pieces, move on to ground patties.

9 months · How to prepare as a pattyslice
Serve ground ostrich as a patty with applesauce or yogurt, which adds moisture and helps swallowing. If baby bites off a big piece, try not to step in. Gagging is normal at this stage. If you are worried, stick out your tongue to show how to spit.

Cut: Shredded
Keep serving patties. Resting a patty on applesauce or yogurt eases swallowing. You can cook and crumble the mince and serve it alone or mixed into lentils or rice. If your child chews well, swallows easily and does not overfill the mouth, small pieces that fit in one bite are an option. Do not serve cubes or large chunks.
Is ostrich meat a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: high
Meat is a frequent cause of choking. Do not serve cubes or chunks. Offer strips, soft patties or minced meat, and remove loose gristle.
Choking on meat happens often, so prepare it in a form that fits your baby's age. Never serve cubes or large chunks. Offer strips, soft patties or mince.
