Each new allergen is offered on its own and watched for two hours. Our allergen introduction guide is available in Turkish for now.
When can babies eat orzo?
Orzo can be offered once baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. Be careful if wheat has not been introduced yet, since orzo is usually a wheat product and wheat is a frequent allergen.
Think of tiny rice-grain noodles cut from semolina or other wheat flour. It appears in soups, salads and baked dishes around the Mediterranean. In Greece it is called kritharaki and in Italy orzo or risoni. In Turkish cooking its close cousin is arpa şehriye.
Orzo gives energy from carbohydrate, with a little protein and fiber, and B vitamins. Some types are whole wheat, and some are enriched with iron and folic acid.
How do you prepare orzo for babies?
Cook it soft. Plain grains can scatter in the mouth and cause gagging. A sauce or a little oil makes swallowing easier.
As baby starts to self-feed, mixing orzo into yogurt, vegetable purée or thick stew is the easiest approach. After 9 months, a light mash with a fork makes the grains stick together.
Check the pack. You can choose whole wheat or enriched products.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to mix into soft foodmash
Stir soft, cooked orzo into a spoonable food such as vegetable purée, yogurt or thick stew, or into a sauce. Offer it on a preloaded spoon or for baby to scoop by hand. Mixing it in makes self-feeding easier and cuts down on gagging. If you have not introduced wheat yet, try wheat on its own first.
9 months
9 months · How to serve lightly mashedcube
Cut: Fork mashed
Mash soft, cooked orzo lightly with a fork so it clumps and is easy to pick up. Serve it alone or in mashed potato or thick stew. Once the pincer grasp sharpens, you can stop mashing. Loose grains on their own can scatter in the mouth and cause gagging. If baby struggles, keep mixing it into spoonable foods.
12 months
12 months · How to serve in meals and saladscube
Serve orzo cooked soft, either plain or in baked dishes and stews. By this age many children handle loose-grain dishes like salads more easily.
Is orzo a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
The choking risk is low, but plain grains can scatter in the mouth and cause gagging. Mix with a sauce or a little oil.
Orzo carries a low choking risk. Served plain, it can cause gagging. Mix it with a sauce or a little oil.
Stay within arm's reach of your baby during meals.
Is orzo a common allergen?
Orzo is usually made of wheat. Wheat and the other gluten grains are frequent allergens, and wheat is among the top childhood food allergies. About two in three children grow out of it by age 12.
A wheat allergy and celiac disease are different conditions. A wheat allergy can fade with age. Celiac disease calls for a strict gluten-free diet for life. What people call a gluten allergy is usually celiac disease.
Another rare condition is anaphylaxis that appears only when wheat is eaten and then followed by exercise. They should avoid wheat for four hours before strenuous exercise.
People with pollen food syndrome, especially those allergic to grass pollen, may be sensitive to wheat. It causes brief itching and burning in the mouth, and sometimes stomach pain, cramps, bloating or diarrhea. It is uncomfortable but unlikely to be dangerous.
If you suspect a wheat allergy, talk to your pediatrician before offering orzo and other pasta. Start with a small amount for the first few servings.
