When can babies eat nutritional yeast?

Nutritional yeast can be offered once baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. It is the same species used in baking and brewing, but this form is inactive and cannot ferment or make dough rise. To make it, the yeast is grown in a glucose-rich mix such as molasses and water. It is then harvested, pasteurized, sterilized, mixed with added nutrients and dried into flakes, granules or powder.

Although it is used in small amounts, it offers a range of nutrients, especially when fortified. It provides carbohydrate, protein and fiber, plus folate and B vitamins B2, B3, B6 and B12. Amounts vary by brand.

How do you prepare nutritional yeast for babies?

Flakes or powder are sprinkled over food or stirred into sauces. The flavor is often compared to cheese and it lifts many dishes.

Check the label to see whether the product is fortified. Vitamins such as B12 come from fortification.

Do not sprinkle the powder close to your baby's face, so it is not inhaled.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to sprinkle onto foodmash

Stir a small amount of the yeast (flakes, granules or powder) into savory porridge, pasta, eggs or cooked vegetables. Sprinkled on slippery foods such as avocado, it makes them easier to grip. Sauces made with it can be drizzled on too.

12 months

12 months · How to use in sauces and dishesmash

Use it on age-appropriate foods as you like. Sprinkle it over roasted vegetables, stir it into pasta and soups, or make sauces and dressings. Wait to put it on popcorn until your child is ready, since popcorn is a high choking risk.

Is nutritional yeast a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

As flakes, granules or powder it carries a low choking risk. Popcorn is a high risk, even with the yeast on it, so wait.

Nutritional yeast carries a low choking risk. Yeast sprinkled on popcorn is a different story, because popcorn is a high choking risk. It is best to wait until your child is developmentally ready.

Stay within arm's reach of your baby during meals.

Is nutritional yeast a common allergen?

Most guidance does not list nutritional yeast among the common allergens. Still, allergy can develop to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the yeast it comes from. In sensitive people, eating the yeast can make eczema worse, and inhaling the powder can bring on asthma symptoms.

Start with a small amount for the first few servings. If nothing happens, increase it slowly.
