When can babies eat meatball?
When can babies have meatballs?
Lean meatballs made at home without salt can be offered once your baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. The Ministry of Health booklet lists well-mashed home dishes with mince and vegetables on its month 8 chart. After 12 months, your child moves on to the minced dishes at the family table.
Nutrition
Meatballs provide protein, iron and zinc from the mince. The NHS notes that iron and zinc are important for babies. The nutrition of a meatball depends on its fat content and added ingredients. Lean mince with grated vegetables makes a nourishing, soft meatball.
How do you prepare meatball for babies?
Cooking and safety
Cook meatballs all the way through. The NHS and the UK Food Standards Agency ask that mince, burgers and meatballs have no pink in the center and clear juices. In mince, bacteria from the surface mix through the meat. A meatball that is browned outside but raw inside is therefore not safe. When cut open it should be steaming hot.
Salt and additions
Do not add salt to your baby's meatballs. The NHS says salt is not good for a baby's kidneys. Ready-made meatballs and processed products such as spicy sausage are salty, so do not offer them. If bread, egg or milk goes into the mixture, your baby should already have tried those foods.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Finger strip
Mix lean ground veal or lamb without salt, spices or bread, and shape it into palm-length meatballs about as thick as two adult fingers. Cook in a little oil or bake until done but still juicy. Your baby grips the meatball in a fist and starts by sucking on it. Add bread and egg only after they have been introduced.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Break the cooked, soft meatball into small pieces. Do not serve a round, whole meatball at this age. Grating zucchini or potato into the mince makes the meatball softer and juicier.

Cut: Bite sized piece
Keep serving meatballs cut into bite-size pieces. Set aside a low-salt portion from dishes such as juicy meatballs, Izmir kofte or kadinbudu. Whole round meatballs should be cut up until age 4.
Is meatball a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Round, firm, whole meatballs carry a choking risk. Shape them as long strips or break them into small pieces.
Choking risk
The NHS advises avoiding round and firm shapes and cutting food into narrow strips. The CDC lists tough, stringy meat, sausages and large pieces of cheese among choking hazards. So serve meatballs as long strips at 6 months and as small pieces at 9 months. Cut whole, round meatballs before serving. Stay with your baby during meals.
Do not give a young child a whole, round meatball without cutting it.
Is meatball a common allergen?
Allergen status
Plain mince is not a common allergen. Bread (wheat and gluten), egg and milk added to homemade meatballs do contain allergens. Introduce each of them separately before mixing them into the meatball. Start any new food with a small amount and watch your baby.

Frequently asked questions about meatball
How do I know the meatball is cooked through?
When cut open, the center should not be pink, the juices should run clear and the inside should be steaming hot. A browned outside does not show that the inside is cooked.
Can I add salt and spices to the meatballs?
Do not add salt. The NHS says salt is not good for a baby's kidneys. No official limit on spices was found for this entry. The existing guidance recommends no spices at 6 months, so keep to that.
Are round meatballs suitable for babies?
Whole, round meatballs carry a choking risk. Serve long strips at 6 months and small pieces at 9 months. Cut round meatballs before serving.
Can I buy ready-made meatballs?
Ready-made and restaurant meatballs are usually salty and spiced. The NHS notes that processed meats are salty. Making them at home without salt suits a baby better.
