When can babies eat loquat?

You can offer loquat once baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. The seeds are a choking risk. They also contain a substance the body can convert to cyanide. Never serve it before every seed is out.

The fruit comes from East Asia. Today it grows in warm climates. It is also called Japanese plum, nispero and pipa. Its botanical relatives include apples, pears and quince.

It gives vitamin A, vitamin B6 and fiber. It is rich in carotenoids. Yellow-fleshed fruit has more beta-carotene. White-fleshed fruit has more lutein.

How do you prepare loquat for babies?

General tips

Pick only ripe, soft fruit. Remove all seeds. The skin is edible. Peel it if it seems hard to chew. The skin of yellow fruit holds far more carotenoids than the flesh.

Do not serve seeds or seed powder. Some cultures use them as medicine, but be cautious with babies.

Jam and desserts

Jam, jelly and desserts usually contain added sugar. A taste now and then is fine. Wait until close to age 2 to serve them regularly. Even then, keep portions small.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a mashmash

Cut: Fork mashed

Carefully take every seed out of soft, ripe fruit. Mash the flesh. Stir it into oatmeal or into muffin and pancake batter. Save desserts with added sugar for after age 2.

6 months · How to prepare as halvesslice

Cut: Halved

For large fruits or a baby with a developing pincer grasp, offer ripe halves with seeds removed. Peeled fruit gets slippery. Roll it in finely ground nuts or unsweetened coconut to add grip.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as small piecescube

Cut: Bite sized piece

Cut ripe, seeded fruit into bite-sized pieces. You can keep offering halves or quarters too. This lets the child practice biting and spitting out a bite that is too big. Peel the skin if it gives trouble.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare as halves and quartersslice

Offer ripe, seeded halves or quarters. After 24 months you can blend a smoothie with coconut milk and a tart fruit such as lime, passion fruit or tamarind. Serving with seeds only makes sense if the child chews and listens well and has practiced spitting seeds.

Is loquat a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Firm, unripe flesh and the seeds are a choking risk. Serve only ripe, soft fruit and remove every seed.

Firm, unripe flesh and the seeds can cause choking. Serve only ripe, soft fruit. Take out every seed before serving.

The skin is not high risk but can be hard to chew. Stay next to baby for the whole meal.

Is loquat a common allergen?

Loquat rarely causes allergy, though cases have been reported. People sensitive to related fruits like apple, apricot, almond or plum may react in a similar way. For people allergic to birch pollen, pollen food allergy syndrome is possible in theory. The sign is usually short itching or burning in the mouth. Peeling and cooking can reduce the reaction.

For the first servings give a small amount on its own. Watch baby closely. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly.

Frequently asked questions about loquat

Does loquat help baby poop?

Yes. It gives fluid and fiber with pectin. This supports gut bacteria and softer stools. High-fiber foods can cause gas or diaper blowouts. Introduce it gradually. If you worry, ask your pediatrician.

Are loquat seeds harmful?

Seeds carry a substance that the body can convert into harmful levels of cyanide when eaten in large amounts. Do not give babies seeds or seed powder.
