When can babies eat lemon?
Lemon can start when your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Lemon is very acidic. On skin it can cause a harmless, short-lived redness, and it can start or worsen diaper rash.
Lemon belongs to the citrus family. Its exact origin is unknown. It is thought to be a natural cross of wild citrus that grew around the Mediterranean. There are now hundreds of kinds, from sweet Meyer lemon to very sour Ponderosa.
It is usually eaten in small amounts but still gives fiber and water. It contains folate, potassium, and vitamins B6 and C. These support digestion, fluid and electrolyte balance, immunity and iron absorption. The peel holds flavonoids that help against inflammation and oxidation.
How do you prepare lemon for babies?
Iron absorption
Squeezing lemon over beans, lentils and leafy greens adds vitamin C. This helps plant iron absorb better.
Lemonade
A small amount of lemonade can be offered as a drink after 12 months. For regular sweet drinks and juice, waiting until the second birthday is better. These drinks raise cavity risk and fill the belly, lowering the wish to eat. An occasional serving after age one is usually fine.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to use as a seasoningmash
Season fruit, vegetable and grain dishes you share with your baby using lemon juice or grated zest. Adding it to meals with beans, lentils and leafy greens raises vitamin C alongside plant iron. The acid can briefly redden the skin near the mouth, so start with a little.
6 months · How to offer a lemon halfslice
Cut: Halved
If the lemon is bigger than your baby's mouth, remove the seeds and hand over a lemon half. Your baby may enjoy tasting it. It is a good moment to start teaching the word sour.

12 months · How to serve wedges for squeezingslice
Cut: Thick wedge
Hand over a large lemon wedge with the seeds removed and show how to squeeze and sprinkle the juice. Add juice and zest to meals as you like. If you share dishes with preserved lemon, chop it small enough to eat in one bite and take out leftover seeds.
Is lemon a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Low risk. Remove the seeds, serve in an age-appropriate way and stay close at meals.
Lemon carries a low risk when prepared to suit your child's age. Even so, in theory any food can cause choking. Remove the seeds. Stay close at meals, within arm's reach.
Is lemon a common allergen?
Lemon is not counted as a common allergen. Even so, sensitivity to citrus is reported often. People with oral allergy syndrome, and particularly people who react to grass or some tree pollens, can react to lemon. The sign is usually brief itching, tingling or burning in the mouth. Taking off the peel or cooking the fruit may soften the reaction. Limonene in the peel may trigger allergic contact dermatitis in people who are sensitive.
Lemon is very acidic. It can cause a harmless red patch around the mouth that fades quickly. In excess it can worsen diaper rash. Before meals you can apply a barrier cream (pure petroleum jelly or a plant oil and wax blend) on the face and diaper area.
If lemon juice stays on the skin and the skin meets sun, a rash called phytophotodermatitis can appear. It is a pigmented, itchy, sometimes blistering and painful rash. After touching citrus, rinse the skin and wear sunscreen. Begin with a small portion.
A common mix-up
A red patch around the mouth is most often an acid effect. If you see lip swelling, hives or vomiting, contact a doctor.
