When can babies eat Jarlsberg cheese?

Jarlsberg is a firm cow's milk cheese from Norway. It tastes mildly nutty and has big holes. It is made in the style of alpine cheeses. The curd is drained and pressed to remove moisture, and helpful bacteria form the holes as it ages.

It provides calcium, vitamin K, vitamin A, protein and fat. These support bones, immunity and growth. Its sodium level is moderate, so it is not recommended as a regular food in the first year.

Age suggestion

Waiting until 12 months works best. A tiny taste now and then before the first birthday does no harm.

How do you prepare Jarlsberg cheese for babies?

Before 12 months

At younger ages, choose fresh cheeses that are lower in salt. If Jarlsberg is already on the table, you can offer a very thin slice or a light sprinkle of grated cheese.

After 12 months

The rind is not edible, so cut it off first. Slice the cheese thin, grate it, or melt a thin layer over a dish. Avoid cubes and thick melted clumps.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

12 months

12 months · How to serve as thin slicesslice

Cut: Thin slice

Cut off the rind first and discard it. Slice the cheese paper thin. Offer the slice whole or tear it into bite-sized pieces. Do not serve it as cubes.

12 months · How to serve grated or meltedcube

Cut: Grated

Grate the cheese and sprinkle it lightly over a dish. To melt it, spread a thin layer over vegetables or bread. Do not leave thick, sticky clumps. The salt level is moderate, so keep the portion small.

Is Jarlsberg cheese a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Cheese cubes and melted clumps can block the airway. Slice thinly, grate, or melt it in a thin layer.

Cheese cubes and clumps of melted cheese are common causes of choking in children. Slice the cheese thin. Do not serve it as cubes. Stay close to your child during meals, within arm's reach.

No cubes

Cube-shaped cheese can block the airway.

Is Jarlsberg cheese a common allergen?

Jarlsberg is made from cow's milk, one of the more frequent food allergens in childhood. Dairy from sheep, goat and buffalo can trigger a similar reaction. Most children with a cow's milk allergy outgrow it by age 6.

Milk can also cause a delayed allergy called FPIES. Its sign is repeated vomiting and diarrhea starting a few hours after eating. Contact your doctor if this happens.

Aged cheeses contain histamine, which can cause a rash in sensitive children. If you suspect a milk allergy, talk to an allergist before offering cheese. Start with a small amount for the first try.

Lactose

Aged cheeses are low in lactose. Children with lactose intolerance may tolerate them better than milk.

Frequently asked questions about Jarlsberg cheese

When can a baby eat Jarlsberg cheese?

Because of its sodium level, waiting until 12 months is best. Fresh, lower-salt cheeses suit younger babies better.

Can you eat the rind of Jarlsberg?

No, the rind is not edible. Cut it off before serving.

How should I cut the cheese?

Slice it thin or grate it. If you melt it, keep the layer thin. Do not serve cubes.

Does Jarlsberg help with constipation?

No. Cheese contains a lot of fat and very little fiber. Too much cheese and milk can make constipation worse.
