When can babies eat Havarti cheese?
When to start
It is best to wait until after the first birthday to serve Havarti regularly. A small nibble now and then is fine. Havarti, like most cheeses, contains a fair amount of sodium, so it is not the best choice for babies. For babies under 12 months, cheeses that are naturally low in sodium are a better pick.
Havarti is a cheese that comes from Denmark. Cream Havarti has more butterfat than protein. Aged styles turn nuttier and saltier with time. Havarti stays softer and smoother than they do. Cream Havarti tastes mildly sweet with a hint of tang.
Why it matters
Havarti contains calcium, which builds bones. Vitamin A supports immunity, eyesight, and skin. Vitamin B2 helps metabolism, and B12 helps blood and the nervous system. It also has selenium, zinc, protein, and omega-3 fats.
The downside is sodium. Too much sodium is unhealthy for babies and adults alike. Serve it in moderation.
How do you prepare Havarti cheese for babies?
Between 6 and 12 months, pick cheeses that are naturally low in sodium instead of Havarti. If you made yourself a Havarti omelet, you can share it with your baby. Thin slices or grated cheese work best. Sharing family meals is always welcome.
After 12 months, offer thin slices, bite-sized pieces, or pea-sized crumbles. Your child should sit in a safe eating setup.
Choosing cheese
Choose a pasteurized cheese made with whole milk, and organic if possible. For babies under 12 months, look for less than 100 mg of sodium per serving. Organic is not an option for every family. Do the best you can with what you have.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
12 months
12 months · Thin rectangular stripsslice
Cut: Finger strip
Cut the cheese into thin, rectangular strips. Serve it while your child sits upright in a high chair. Do not give cheese in a stroller, a car seat, or while running around.
12 months · Small pieces, crumbles, or gratedcube
Offer thin bite-sized pieces or pea-sized crumbles. Crumbles help finger skills. Another idea is to grate the cheese and melt it on top of vegetables or other foods.

No cubes
Do not cut cheese into cubes. Do not give cheese while your child is on the move.
Is Havarti cheese a common allergen?
Havarti comes from cow's milk, one of the most common allergens in young children. About one in five childhood food allergies is a milk allergy. It often fades with time. Most children outgrow it by age 6. Many babies with milder milk protein allergy can bring milk back at their first birthday under a doctor's guidance.
Havarti is low in lactose, so people with lactose intolerance may handle it better. Aged cheeses contain histamine, which can cause rashes in sensitive children. Compared with other aged cheeses, Havarti spends less time ripening, which may make it gentler on sensitive children.
If you suspect milk allergy
If milk allergy runs strongly in your family or you suspect it in your baby, talk to an allergist before offering any cheese.
For the first few servings, offer a small amount on its own. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly over later servings.

Frequently asked questions about Havarti cheese
Can babies have Havarti?
Wait until the first birthday to serve it regularly. An occasional thin slice or a little grated cheese is fine. The main concern for babies is the sodium.
What if my baby refuses to eat?
Once the meal ends, give a feeding from the breast or a bottle. Do not pressure your baby, since pressure makes refusal worse. Teething, illness, or sleepiness can all cause food refusal.
Which utensils are needed at the start?
None. Put food right on the tray or plate. You can keep a spoon and fork nearby, but the skill to use them comes in early toddlerhood.
