When can babies eat gnocchi?

Gnocchi can be offered once your baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. It is an Italian pasta-like dish. The Italian name means knot or knuckle and points to the shape. The dough combines flour, egg, mashed potato and salt. It is rolled out and cut into pieces.

Some kinds are small, and others (such as malfatti) are bigger. Texture varies too. Pan-frying makes it firm, and boiling or steaming keeps it soft.

It gives plenty of carbohydrates, which fuel growth, play and exploration. Some products can be high in sodium. Babies eat little, so this is often not a problem.

Contains allergens

Gnocchi usually contains wheat and egg. Other allergens may be present. Read the label on ready-made products.

How do you prepare gnocchi for babies?

Cook gnocchi until very soft. Flattening pointed ends, or simmering pieces in sauce, lowers the risk. For a young baby, choose the boiled kind.

If your baby overfills the mouth, give pieces one at a time. Offer whole gnocchi only when you trust your child's biting and chewing. Its texture is good for cutlery practice.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Flattened

Mash large, very soft boiled gnocchi until flat. Hand it to your baby or set it on the tray. Fried or baked gnocchi is firmer, so skip it at this age.

9 months

9 months · How to cut and servecube

Once your baby starts using the pincer grasp, cut soft, well-cooked gnocchi lengthwise into halves or quarters. Flatten any pointed ends, or simmer the pieces in sauce until very soft. Serve plain or with sauce. If your baby stuffs the mouth, hand over one piece at a time. Do not cut into round coins.

12 months · How to cut and servecube

Keep serving soft gnocchi cut lengthwise. Try whole gnocchi from about 18 months, once your child bites and chews well and does not stuff the mouth. Offer one piece at a time. Hold off on small fried or baked gnocchi until closer to age 2.

Is gnocchi a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Small, firm and springy, so the risk is high. Cook until very soft, flatten, and never cut into coin shapes.

Gnocchi is small and often firm and springy. These qualities raise the choking risk.

Make sure it is soft. Serve it flattened or cut lengthwise to suit the age. Avoid round, coin-shaped slices. Stay beside your baby during the meal.

Do not cut into coins

Round, coin-shaped pieces of gnocchi raise the choking risk.

Is gnocchi a common allergen?

Gnocchi is usually made with wheat flour and egg. Depending on the recipe, other allergens such as milk or soy may be included.

Try these allergens one at a time first. If there is a reaction, you will know which one caused it. When you move to the mixed dish, you will know your baby already eats each of them safely.

Give a small amount for the first few meals. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly.
