When can babies eat flaxseed?
Flaxseed is a seed you can start once your baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. It comes from the flax plant, whose Latin name means "very useful." The seed is also used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
The seed gives fiber, fat and protein. It also contains alpha-linolenic acid, a plant omega-3, plus selenium, zinc and some iron. These nutrients help digestion, energy, growth, red blood cells and brain development. It also carries antioxidants.
Part of a varied diet
Flaxseed is fine as part of a varied diet. Very large amounts could cause problems in theory, so keep portions small.
How do you prepare flaxseed for babies?
Grind the seeds just before serving. Sprinkle the ground seed over mashed vegetables, warm porridge or yogurt. You can also fold it into pancake, bread or cake batter. A few drops of flaxseed oil can go into a meal too.
As your baby grows, break seeded baked goods into small bites for self-feeding. For older children, energy balls and smoothies work well.
Egg swap in baking
Instead of one egg in a recipe, whisk a spoonful of fine flax meal into three spoonfuls of water. Let it thicken to a gel before it goes into the batter.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months
6 months · How to prepare as a puréemash
Grind the seeds fresh in a coffee grinder or blender and stir them into oatmeal, yogurt or fruit purée. Whole seeds pass through undigested. Start with half a teaspoon a day, because too much fiber can cause bloating. Keep ground seeds in the refrigerator.

Cut: Ground
Keep using ground flaxseed in bread, cakes and main dishes. Flaxseed oil can go onto a salad without heating. Whole seeds are not given until age 4 unless they are ground.
Is flaxseed a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Choking risk is low. Do not hand over loose spoonfuls of dry seeds or meal, since they can be inhaled. Always mix them into a soft food.
Flaxseed carries a low choking risk. Any food can still cause choking. The main concern is aspiration, which means small pieces get breathed into the airway.
So do not offer dry seeds or meal by the loose spoonful. Always mix them into a moist food. Stay within arm's reach of your baby for the whole meal.
Is flaxseed a common allergen?
Flaxseed is not one of the major allergens, and allergy to it is rare. Still, case reports describe reactions in kids as well as grown-ups, a few of them serious.
Offer a very small amount the first time. This is especially important when your child is already allergic to another seed. If nothing happens, raise the amount slowly over later meals.

Ground seed is the better choice, because whole seeds can pass through undigested. If you do use whole seeds, mix them into a soft food and do not serve them dry.
How much flaxseed per day is fine?
