When can babies eat einkorn?

Einkorn can be offered from about 6 months, once baby shows signs of readiness for solids. Einkorn belongs to the wheat family. It contains wheat and gluten.

Einkorn is a type of wheat native to the Mediterranean region. It is also called farro piccolo and tiphe. In Turkey it is sold as siyez bulgur, flour, and pasta. It is less common than bread wheat. It tastes strong and nutty.

Nutrition

Einkorn gives carbohydrate for quick energy. Its fiber helps the gut microbiome grow and helps keep blood sugar steady. It also holds zinc, iron, folate, and vitamin B6. These matter for healthy blood, digestion, and mental development.

Handy tip

Einkorn comes as flour, pasta, bread, flakes, baby cereal, and bulgur. All are ways to add grain variety to baby's diet.

How do you prepare einkorn for babies?

Cook einkorn as porridge or as a soft pilaf. Stirring cooked grains into mashed vegetables or yogurt is another good way. For finger food, prefer balls and fritters to loose grains.

Einkorn also supports regularity. Its fiber and resistant starch help digestion alongside a balanced diet. Stool patterns vary a lot between babies. If you are concerned, ask your pediatrician.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

When the pincer grasp appears, offer a grain salad. Press the grains flat using a fork's back so they cling together and are easy to pick up. You can also stir cooked grains into mashed vegetables or yogurt.

Cut: Finger strip

Make strips from pancakes or waffles made of einkorn flour so your child can practice biting. For the pincer grasp, cut them into bite-sized pieces too.

12 months · How to servecube

Einkorn, once cooked, works as finger food or in a grain salad, and you can also stir it into soft dishes. If your child struggles to pick up grains, press them flat with a fork.

12 months · How to serve as bread and pastaslice

You can serve bread, pancakes, and pasta made with einkorn flour. After about 18 months, your child can practice scooping grains with a spoon and spearing einkorn finger foods with a fork.

Is einkorn a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Choking risk is low. Single grains can slip into the airway. Make porridge, mash grains with a fork, or mix them into a soft food.

Einkorn is not a common cause of choking. Single grains can, however, slip into the airway. This is called aspiration. Food or fluid enters the airway without blocking it.

To lower the risk, make porridge, press the grains flat with a fork, or mix them with a soft food or sauce. Stay near baby during meals.

Is einkorn a common allergen?

Einkorn belongs to the wheat family. In children, wheat ranks high on the list of food allergens. Happily, about two thirds grow out of it by their 12th birthday.

Celiac disease and wheat allergy are two different conditions. A wheat allergy may fade with age, while celiac disease calls for a strict gluten-free diet for life. People who say they have a "gluten allergy" usually mean celiac disease.

People with pollen food allergy (oral allergy syndrome), especially those allergic to grass pollen, can be sensitive to wheat. It causes a brief itch, tingle, or burn in the mouth and is rarely dangerous.

Rarely, wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis occurs. Exercising within a few hours of eating wheat can then cause a severe reaction. For four hours before strenuous exercise, these people should not eat wheat.

Some FPIES cases involve wheat or other gluten grains. FPIES is a rare, delayed reaction with repeated vomiting and diarrhea a few hours after eating. Untreated, it can cause serious fluid loss. Most cases pass in early childhood.

Worried about a possible wheat allergy? Check with your pediatrician before serving it at home. Give a small amount at the first meals and watch closely. If nothing happens, raise the amount slowly.

Emergency
