When can babies eat durian?
Durian can be offered from about 6 months, once baby shows signs of readiness for solids.
Durian is a large fruit with a spiky shell and a strong smell. It comes from the islands of Southeast Asia and is used in both sweet and savory dishes. Once the shell is split, creamy flesh appears, colored white, yellow, green, or red by variety. Some are sweeter and smell milder. The sharp odor has led some cities to ban it in public places.
Nutrition
Durian offers plenty of fiber and energy-giving carbohydrate, plus B vitamins such as folate. Among fruits it stands out for its protein and fat. It also carries vitamin C, potassium, carotenoids, flavanols, and quercetin.
Handy tip
Once opened, durian keeps only a short time. Spoon the flesh into a sealed container, keep it in the fridge up to five days, or freeze it for as long as two months.
How do you prepare durian for babies?
Remove all seeds first. Mash the flesh. Serving it in a bowl makes it easier for baby to scoop by hand.
Durian seeds can be eaten when cooked thoroughly and prepared for the child's age. They carry a high choking risk, though, so taking them out is the safest route.
Seeds
Do not serve raw or whole seeds. Check every time that all seeds have been removed.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
