When can babies eat dragon fruit?
Dragon fruit can be offered from about 6 months, once baby shows signs of readiness for solids.
The fruit grows on a cactus that began in the Americas and is now farmed in warm regions worldwide. It is also called pitaya or strawberry pear. It has thick, bright skin and a soft, seedy inside. The taste runs from mild to very sweet.
Nutrition
Dragon fruit gives carbohydrate for quick energy and fiber for the gut and digestion. Its vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. Vitamin K plays a part in blood clotting. It also holds antioxidants.
How do you prepare dragon fruit for babies?
Pick a ripe fruit and always peel the skin. Inside are small black seeds. They are edible and harmless.
To cut down on slipperiness, roll the pieces in finely ground nuts, coconut, or hemp seeds. Tree nuts are a common allergen. Use them only if baby has already tried them.
Allergen note
If you coat the fruit with nuts or hemp seeds, introduce those foods to baby first.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Halved

Is dragon fruit a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Ripe fruit is low risk. Peel it and pick a soft, ripe one. It is slippery, so baby may struggle to hold it.
Ripe dragon fruit carries a low choking risk when prepared to suit your child's age. Peel the skin. Use large wedges because the surface is slippery.
Stay near baby during meals.
Is dragon fruit a common allergen?
Dragon fruit is not a common allergen. Allergy is rare but has been reported. Those with oral allergy syndrome or a latex allergy are more likely to react. That means a brief itch, tingle, or burn in the mouth, which is seldom dangerous.
Offer a small amount at the first meals. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly at later meals.
