When can babies eat crepe?

When can babies have crepes?

Crepes can be offered once baby is ready for solids, from about 6 months. The NHS lists bread, pasta, rice and oats among suitable starchy foods at 6 months. Because crepes contain egg, milk and gluten, they introduce three allergens at once.

Nutrition

Crepes mainly provide the carbohydrate of wheat flour. The egg and milk add some protein and a little calcium. Vegetables or fruit in the batter add variety. The amount of added sugar, honey and salt is the main factor that shapes how nutritious a crepe is.

How do you prepare crepe for babies?

Preparation basics

Make the batter without sugar, honey or salt. The NHS advises against adding salt or sugar to baby food. Honey is not given in any form before 12 months. Cut the crepe into strips or small pieces.

Cook the egg fully. The NHS says eggs other than British Lion-stamped ones should be cooked until solid. In Turkey, cooking eggs thoroughly is the safe approach.

Fillings and extras

Avoid sugary fillings such as chocolate spread, jam and honey. Plain yogurt, mashed fruit, unsalted curd cheese (lor) or mashed banana are better options. If you use salty fillings such as curd cheese or white cheese, watch the salt.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Finger strip

Cut the crepe into strips about the thickness of two adult fingers. Freshly cooked crepes with a slightly crisp edge stick less in the mouth. If it has gone dry, spread butter, applesauce or yogurt on it to reduce gagging. If baby struggles to pick it up, hold the strip in the air and let them take it. Crepes made with honey are not given before 12 months.

9 months

Offer the crepe in bite-sized pieces, or keep offering strips for biting practice. If baby stuffs their mouth, place only one piece at a time. If you add vegetables to the batter, grate them or cook them until very soft.

You can continue with strips and bite-sized pieces, and also offer a whole crepe for biting practice. It is fine to serve with an age-appropriate fork, but using a fork properly takes until age two or three. Give a cup of water alongside a dry crepe.

Is crepe a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Crepe is soft but can be sticky and dry. Serve strips or small pieces and place one piece in the mouth at a time. If it is dry, spread yogurt or purée on it.

Choking risk

Crepe is soft and low risk, but it can clump in the mouth when dry or sticky. Serve strips or small pieces and place one piece in the mouth at a time. Spread yogurt or purée on crepes that have dried out. The CDC advises seating your baby upright and watching closely during meals.

Is crepe a common allergen?

Allergen status

Crepes contain three allergens: wheat flour (gluten), egg and cow's milk. The NHS advises introducing all three from about 6 months, one at a time and in very small amounts. After each is tolerated, it becomes part of the regular diet.

If you want crepes among baby's first foods, introduce egg, milk and gluten separately first, then combine them in crepes. That makes it easier to find the cause if a reaction happens.

Signs of a reaction

Diarrhea, vomiting, cough, wheezing, throat swelling, rashes and eye irritation can be signs of an allergic reaction. Call emergency services for throat swelling or trouble breathing. If your baby has eczema or there is a family history of food allergy, talk to your doctor before introducing it.

Frequently asked questions about crepe

Can I add honey to crepes?

No. Honey is not given in any form before 12 months. The NHS notes that honey may contain bacterial toxins that can cause infant botulism.

What can I put inside a crepe?

Plain yogurt, mashed fruit or mashed banana work well. Avoid sugary fillings such as chocolate spread, jam and honey.

How long should I serve crepes as strips?

Per the current preparation cards, strips at 6 months, bite-sized pieces at 9 months, and a whole crepe also at 12 months. If baby stuffs their mouth, place only one piece at a time.

Is it safe to give three allergens at once?

The NHS advises introducing allergens one at a time. So trying egg, milk and gluten separately before crepes makes it easier to find the cause of a reaction.
