When can babies eat cranberry?

Cranberries can start when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months.

Cranberries are native to boggy regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Today they are grown in moist, well-drained soil in cool climates. They ripen to a rosy red, yet stay firm and extremely tart. Their high acid keeps them fresh a long time. That natural tartness is why cranberry is often paired with sugar today in desserts, juice and sauces.

Nutrition

Cranberries give carbohydrates, fiber and water. They also carry vitamins C, E and K. These nutrients provide energy, feed the gut microbiome and meet fluid needs. They also support electrolyte balance, skin, iron absorption, immunity and blood clotting. They are rich in antioxidants such as quercetin and proanthocyanidins. With plenty of vitamin C, they pair well with plant iron sources such as beans and nuts to help iron absorption.

How do you prepare cranberry for babies?

Cranberry sauce

Cranberry sauce can be given when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. Most sauces have added sugar. A small amount now and then is fine.

Dried cranberries

Dried cranberries can be given only after soaking in hot water until fully soft. Dried fruit is hard to chew and a choking risk. Wait until after the second birthday to serve plain dried cranberries regularly. Your child should have molars, chew well every time and not stuff the mouth.

Do not give your baby dried cranberries that have not been soaked.

Cranberry juice

A small amount of cranberry juice can be given after 12 months. For regular juice and sweet drinks, waiting until the second birthday may help. Regular juice raises the risk of cavities and fills the belly. That lowers your child's wish to eat other foods at meals and may harm growth over time. Occasional juice after one year is generally fine.

With iron

Because they are high in vitamin C, serve cranberries with plant iron sources such as beans.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to cook or chopmash

Simmer fresh or frozen berries until they pop. Or mince raw berries finely or blend them, and fold the result into warm porridge, ricotta or yogurt. In pancakes, waffles and baked goods suited to your baby's age, berries can go in whole, since baking softens and bursts them.

9 months

9 months · How to flattenslice

Cut: Flattened

Press cooked or raw cranberries into small discs. Put them straight on the tray. Your baby picks them up with a pincer grasp. Fresh raw cranberries are very firm and must be fully flattened. Babies find flattened raw ones hard to chew and may spit more. You can also serve berries cooked until soft, alone or mixed into other foods.

12 months

12 months · How to keep flatteningslice

Cut: Flattened

Serve cranberries cooked or fully flattened into discs. Cranberry sauce and baked goods with cranberries also work. Do not serve whole raw cranberries. The source suggests considering whole berries only after 24 months, if your child chews well every time and does not stuff the mouth.

Is cranberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Cranberries are tiny, round and quite firm. Never serve whole raw berries. Cook them or flatten them completely. For whole berries, wait until after 24 months and check your child's eating skills.

Cranberries are a choking risk. They are tiny, round and hard to squash. Prepare them to suit your child's age. Stay within arm's reach at meals.

Cutting rule

Do not serve whole raw cranberries. Cook or fully flatten them. Consider a whole raw berry only after 24 months, if your child chews well every time and does not stuff the mouth. Show how to crush it with the molars. If your child is not ready, flatten a little less each time.

Is cranberry a common allergen?

Cranberry rarely causes a food allergy. Cranberries, and dried ones above all, are rich in salicylates. A person with a salicylate allergy, or with an allergy to blueberry, huckleberry or lingonberry, may react to cranberry as well.

Contact rash

Acidic fruit like this more often causes a harmless rash where it touches the skin, near the mouth or under the diaper. Before meals, smooth a thin protective layer (plain petroleum jelly or a plant oil and wax balm) onto your baby's face and bottom.

Sulfites

Sulfites may be added to dried cranberries and to the juice. Some people, mainly those who have asthma, react to added sulfites in ways that resemble allergy. Most asthmatic people do not react to the small amounts found in food.

Start with a small amount for the first servings. If there is no reaction, raise it slowly over later meals.
