Coconut yogurt, served for 6 months

When can babies eat coconut yogurt?

Coconut yogurt can start when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months.

This product draws on traditional coconut dishes of the tropics. Coconut is a staple food in Southeast Asia, on Pacific islands and in some African regions. The flesh, milk and water go into curries, stews and desserts. The yogurt is made by culturing coconut milk with probiotic bacteria.

Nutrition

Coconut yogurt has a lot of fat, and babies need fat for energy and for the brain to develop. A few brands include live bacterial cultures. A few also add calcium and vitamin D. This varies by brand, so read the label.

How do you prepare coconut yogurt for babies?

No tools needed

In the early months your baby's hands are enough. Put the yogurt on the tray or in a bowl and let your baby explore. You can keep a baby spoon nearby so your child gets used to it. Spoon skills are not expected until the early toddler years.

Read the label

Some brands may contain soy or tree nuts. Check the ingredient list. Make sure every common allergen in the product has been introduced to your baby first.

Skip sweetened and flavored types. Choose a plain product with no added sugar.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to serve in a bowlmash

Put the yogurt in a bowl. Your baby can scoop it by hand, or you can load a spoon and hold it out in the air. If you have already introduced nut or seed butter, stir some in. The yogurt thickens and stays on the spoon better. It also works as a base for sweet or savory sauces.

9 months

9 months · How to practice with a spoonmash

Your baby may begin to pick up a pre-loaded spoon alone. Keep serving the yogurt in a bowl. If your baby tires quickly, switch between fingers, a spoon held in the air and a spoon resting on the bowl's edge. Keeping a few spoons ready helps.

Pre-load the spoon, then rest it on the rim of the bowl. Let your child pick it up and try. Be patient. Steady, independent spoon use often settles in after age 2. You can also serve the yogurt with fruit pieces.

Is coconut yogurt a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Coconut yogurt is a soft spoonable food with a low choking risk. Still, stay beside your baby.

Coconut yogurt is a low choking risk food. In theory, any food can cause choking. Serve it in a way that suits your child's age and stay close at meals.

Is coconut yogurt a common allergen?

Coconut yogurt is made mostly of coconut. Coconut allergy is rare. When it does occur, it has been tied to serious reactions. Coconut allergy is not usual in people with peanut or tree nut allergy. Still, rare cross-reactions with macadamia, almond, walnut, hazelnut, lentil and latex have been noted.

Read the product label with care. Common allergens such as soy or tree nuts may have been added. If your baby has not safely tried those allergens first, do not serve the yogurt.
