When can babies eat Chipotle pepper?
Chipotle pepper can be offered when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. You may still prefer to wait until your baby has tried a range of other foods. Chipotle can be very hot and is added to dishes, so a baby may be unsure which foods are naturally spicy. Hot peppers sometimes leave a harmless rash on skin they touch. They can also bring on or aggravate diaper rash and stomach upset.
Where it comes from
Chipotle and its fresh form, the jalapeño, come from the Americas. There they add spicy flavor to moles, salsas and soups. Nahuatl chilpoctli is where the name comes from. The two main kinds are chipotle morita and chipotle meco. Growers harvest jalapeños once they are ripe and red. Then they are canned in sauce or dried and smoked. This preserving gives chipotle a smoky taste that adds depth to tacos, sauces and stews.
Nutrition
Chipotle is usually eaten in small amounts. Still, it gives vitamin C, which supports immunity and iron absorption. It also carries a little fiber and vitamin A. According to the source it has more antioxidants than fresh jalapeños by weight.
How do you prepare Chipotle pepper for babies?
Adjusting the heat
Babies can enjoy big flavors, hot peppers included. Offer small tastes at first, and adjust the heat for your child. To cut the heat, remove the seeds. Taste the food yourself before serving it to your baby. If it is too hot, adjust the seasoning to soften it.
Balancing the heat
Serve it with a creamy food such as mashed avocado, plain yogurt, or breast milk, formula or cow's milk. Foods and drinks that are acidic, or based on water, make the burn worse.
Preventing rash
A rash can appear around the mouth. A thin coat of barrier cream, or of an ointment like pure petroleum jelly, on the face and bottom may keep contact rash away.
Breathing in the powder
Sniffing powdered chipotle can irritate the nose and trigger sneezing and coughing. That is not always an allergy.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to add to foodmash
Chop chipotle very fine, puree it, or use chipotle powder. Offer only a small taste of your own dish. Hold off on very spicy food as a regular meal until your baby is a bit older. Balance the heat with mashed avocado, plain yogurt or age-appropriate milk.
9 months
9 months · How to add to shared dishesmash
Mix a little finely minced or pureed chipotle, or chipotle powder, into dishes such as chili, enchiladas or salsa. For less heat, discard the seeds and veins. Keep avocado or plain yogurt nearby. At this age children rub their faces and eyes, so watch their hands before chipotle reaches the eyes.
12 months
12 months · How to use in cookingmash
Chop, puree or mince chipotle and use it in cooking as you like. Chipotle powder can also go into a meal. Remove the seeds if you wish. A small cup of milk, or other dairy, can go beside the plate. If your child is not used to spice, say in advance that the taste is strong.
Is Chipotle pepper a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Finely chopped or pureed chipotle is not a choking risk. The heat can cause more coughing and drooling. Serve it with a creamy food.
No, finely chopped chipotle is not a common choking hazard. Its heat can make a baby cough and drool more, which can increase gagging. Serve your baby's portion with avocado, plain yogurt or age-appropriate milk. Stay within arm's reach at meals.
Is Chipotle pepper a common allergen?
No, it is not a common allergen. Chipotle allergy is uncommon but has been reported. Contact reactions to hot peppers, such as a brief rash, eye irritation, trouble breathing and digestive upset, are often mistaken for allergy. They usually come from capsaicin irritating the skin and airways and are not a true allergy.
A latex or pollen allergy can go along with a pepper allergy or with oral allergy syndrome. That usually means a brief itch or burn in the mouth, and a dangerous reaction is unlikely. Cooking chipotle may reduce the reaction.
Give a small amount for the first servings and watch. If there is no reaction, raise it over time.
