When can babies eat chia seeds?

Pre-soaked chia seeds can be offered when your baby is ready for solids, around 6 months.

Chia is the seed of a flowering herb native to the dry highlands of Central America. It is still common in regional cooking. Its rich nutrition has made it known worldwide as a 'superfood'.

Nutrition

Chia gives fiber, fat and protein. Calcium, iron, selenium, zinc and plant omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) are in it too. These nutrients support digestion, energy, growth, bones, red blood cells and brain development. It also has antioxidants.

How do you prepare chia seeds for babies?

Soaking and storage

Soak the seeds in liquid at least 30 minutes before serving. Do not feed spoonfuls of dry seeds. A pinch of dry seeds sprinkled on food is fine. Keep whole seeds up to 18 months at room temperature. In the fridge, ground seeds last as long as 1 year. Use an airtight container.

Constipation

Soluble fiber is very high in chia. It supports bowel function and may ease constipation. Too much can fill your baby up, curb appetite and upset digestion. Start small and build up over time.

Chia as an egg substitute

In baked goods, stir 1 part chia into 3 parts warm liquid and leave it to thicken for half an hour or more. One large egg equals about 1 tablespoon (15 g) of chia with 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of liquid. The mixture keeps in a sealed container in the fridge up to 1 week.

Older children

After 18 months you can use it to thicken smoothies or to blend a quick agua fresca from mashed fruit, fresh lime juice and water.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to prepare as a pureemash

Never serve chia dry. Mix 1 teaspoon of chia with 4 teaspoons of water, breast milk or yogurt and let it sit at least 15 minutes. Once it swells into a gel, stir it into porridge or fruit puree. Keep to about 1 teaspoon a day, since too much fiber can cause constipation or bloating.

Mix soaked chia with yogurt and fruit puree into a thick pudding, or add it to fritter and pancake batter. Let your baby scoop it by hand, or pre-load a spoon. Dry chia is not served as a sprinkle.

12 months · How to servemash

Carry on with soaked chia pudding and chia baked into batter. Dry seeds swell in the throat, so they are not sprinkled dry before age 4. Offer more water alongside. Let your child feed themselves by hand or with a spoon.

Is chia seeds a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Dry chia swells and sticks in the throat. Always soak it in liquid first. Do not serve dry sprinkles.

When chia seeds meet moisture, saliva included, they swell and may stick together. This raises choking risk. Soak them in liquid for 30 minutes before serving. Do not feed spoonfuls of dry seeds. Stay within arm's reach at meals.

Dry seeds

Do not serve dry seeds by the spoonful. Unsoaked seeds can swell and stick in the throat.

Is chia seeds a common allergen?

No, it is not a common allergen. Chia allergy is uncommon but not unheard of. Limited evidence suggests some people with sesame allergy may react to chia as well. If you suspect your baby has a sesame allergy, talk to an allergist before serving chia.

For the first servings give a small amount of pre-soaked seeds and watch closely. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly.
