When can babies eat cayenne pepper?

Cayenne pepper can be added in tiny amounts when your baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. It comes from the Americas and now grows in warm regions around the world. Most often the pepper is dried and ground to a fine powder. Cooks use it to season eggs, hot sauces and seafood.

It also holds carotenoids, plus small amounts of vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin C and vitamin A. The amount used in a dish is small, so the nutrition it adds is limited.

Do babies enjoy heat

Babies can enjoy bold flavors too. Begin with a small taste and watch your child's reaction. The goal is a positive experience with new flavors. Taste the dish yourself before serving. If it is too hot, use less spice.

How do you prepare cayenne pepper for babies?

Balance the heat

A spoon of mashed avocado, plain yogurt or milk suited to your baby's age calms the heat. Acidic and water-based foods and drinks make it feel hotter, so do not offer water to cool the mouth.

Do not give pepper capsules, extracts or supplements. Their safety in babies is not well studied. Stomach upset and skin irritation have been reported.

Protecting the skin

Hot food sometimes leaves a harmless rash near the mouth. It can also start or worsen diaper rash. If your baby has sensitive skin, put a thin coat of barrier cream on the face and bottom ahead of the meal. Pure petroleum jelly, or a balm of plant oil and wax, does the job.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Ground

Stir less than a pinch of ground pepper into the food your baby is already eating. Adjust the amount to your baby's reaction. Mashed avocado or plain yogurt can calm the heat, and so can a sip of breast milk or formula. If your baby coughs, use less.

Keep seasoning age-appropriate dishes with pepper. Set the amount by your child's taste. Offer avocado, plain yogurt or a sip of milk alongside to soften the heat.

Is cayenne pepper a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Ground pepper is not a choking risk. Add only a tiny amount to food. The powder can cause coughing if inhaled, so do not sprinkle it near your baby's face.

Ground pepper is not a choking risk. In theory any food can cause choking. Prepare the meal in a way that fits your baby's age and stay close during meals. Breathing in the powder can trigger coughing.

Is cayenne pepper a common allergen?

Cayenne is not a common allergen. An allergy is rare but has been reported. People with latex or pollen allergy, especially to birch and mugwort, may cross-react to peppers. This can cause short itching or burning in the mouth. Cooking the pepper may reduce the reaction.

A skin rash or eye irritation after contact is mostly not an allergy. The capsaicin in peppers irritates sensitive people. Still, serve very little at first. When no reaction follows, raise the amount slowly.
