When can babies eat cashew butter?

Once your baby is around 6 months old and ready for solids, cashew butter can begin, as long as it is first loosened with a little liquid or purée. Cashews and cashew butter carry a choking risk, so follow the preparation steps with care. Do not give butter with honey to a baby under 12 months, because of the risk of infant botulism.

The cashew tree is native to Central and South America. India now leads the world in cashew growing. To make the butter, whole nuts are ground to a paste. It goes on bread, add it to smoothies, and use it as a dip or sauce base.

The butter gives healthy fats, protein, some carbohydrate and fiber. Zinc, vitamin E, iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium come along too, good for growth, bones, defenses and brain.

How do you prepare cashew butter for babies?

Honey, salt and sugar

Avoid butter with honey until 12 months. Salt or sugar is added to some brands. It is usually a small amount and not a worry for a taste. To cut salt and sugar, pick an unsalted, unsweetened ('natural') butter.

After 18 months

At 18 months you can offer chunky butter spread thinly on, or mixed into, other foods. You can also stay with smooth butter.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Smooth puree

Mix smooth butter that has no honey with water, a fruit or vegetable purée, breast milk or formula until it flows freely. Stir it into warm cereal, yogurt or mash, or brush a very thin layer on a toast strip. Offer water in an open cup for sticky bits. You can also add it to pancake or baking batter, or to sauces. Check that it has no honey.

Spread thinned cashew butter in a very thin coat over a toast strip. Do not spread it thick and do not serve it alone on a spoon.

Cut: Smooth puree

Fold smooth butter into oatmeal, applesauce or yogurt, or smear a bit over toast or pancakes. Thinning is no longer needed at this age, but keep spreading it thin and avoid big globs.

Is cashew butter a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Thick, sticky butter is a choking risk. Thin it first, spread a thin layer and avoid big globs.

Cashew butter is thick and sticky, which raises the choking risk. Prepare it for your baby's age and spread it thin. Stay with your baby during meals.

Is cashew butter a common allergen?

Cashew is one of the common allergens. Botanically a seed, it is grouped with tree nuts for allergy purposes. Its protein resembles that of pistachio, so around three quarters of children allergic to cashew also react to pistachio. Between 0.5 and 1.2 percent of the population has a tree nut allergy. It tends to stay for life, and only about one child in eleven grows out of it.

Sumac and pink peppercorn come from the same plant family as cashew (Anacardiaceae). People allergic to cashew might react to those spices. Mango sits in that family too, yet most cashew-allergic people can eat mango flesh with no problem.

Being allergic to one nut makes another allergy more likely. Still, you do not need to drop every nut. A varied diet counts for a child's growth and quality of life. With a cashew allergy, let an allergist decide which nuts are safe.

Most babies need no testing beforehand, even when allergy runs in the family. Talk to a pediatrician or allergist before trying cashew at home if your baby has severe eczema, has had an allergic reaction, or may have a nut allergy. The doctor tells you whether to start at home or under clinic supervision. More and more evidence shows that giving allergens early protects, so do not wait longer than needed.

Give only a tiny amount the first time at home. Offer a pinch of finely ground cashew. You can also thin an eighth of a teaspoon of smooth butter with formula, breast milk or water. After the first time, keep offering it, ideally twice weekly. Stop only when signs of a reaction show up.
