When can babies eat caraway?

Caraway can start when your baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. Note that it is not cumin, even though some labels mix them up.

Botanically it is a dried fruit that most people call a seed, and its relatives include fennel, coriander and cumin. It is grown in North Africa, Europe and Western Asia. People value its earthy, lightly sweet, anise-like taste. It is a classic seasoning in bread, cheese, sauerkraut and sausage.

In small amounts it supplies various vitamins, minerals such as calcium, and fiber.

How do you prepare caraway for babies?

Caraway versus cumin

They look alike and belong to the same plant family, but taste different. Caraway is sweeter, with a light anise note. Cumin is earthier and spicier.

Skip the oil

Little research exists on the safety of caraway oil for babies. Avoid the oil.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Is caraway a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Low risk. Prepare for your baby's age and stay close during meals.

Caraway is a low-risk food. Any food can still cause choking. Prepare it for your baby's age and stay with your baby during meals.

Is caraway a common allergen?

Caraway is not a common allergen. Allergy is rare but has been reported. Some spice blends with caraway may hold common allergens, so check labels when your child has a food allergy.

Oral allergy syndrome may trigger a reaction to caraway too. Mostly it affects people with allergy to birch or mugwort pollen, or to Apiaceae plants such as carrot, celery, coriander, dill and fennel. The mouth itches, tingles or burns briefly, which is usually not dangerous. Cooking can reduce the reaction.

Spices can also cause reactions that look like allergy. Breathing in ground spice irritates the nose and can cause sneezing and coughing, which may not be an allergy. Hot, spicy dishes may give a mild rash near the mouth, which is harmless, and may bring on or worsen diaper rash. Before the meal, a thin coat of barrier ointment such as plain petroleum jelly on your baby's face and bottom helps.

Offer a small amount for the first few meals. If there is no reaction, increase gradually.
