Blueberry, served for 6 months

When can babies eat blueberry?

Blueberries can be served around 6 months, once baby is ready. Their round shape carries a choking risk, so they must be prepared to suit the age at every stage.

Round and firm

A whole blueberry carries a choking risk. Mash, flatten or halve it as the age cards describe.

Origin

Blueberries now grow in many parts of the world. Canada and the US produce most of them. Their ancestors are thought to be tundra plants that spread north once the glaciers withdrew. The same plant family holds other blue berries, such as the bilberry of Asia and Europe, and these are often called blueberries too.

Nutrition

Blueberries are a good fiber source. They give small amounts of vitamin E, vitamin K and vitamin C. Vitamin C helps absorb plant iron, so they pair well with iron-rich plant foods such as lentils, beans, nut butters and seeds. Their antioxidant content is among the highest of any fruit, and they contain anthocyanins.

How do you prepare blueberry for babies?

You can cook ripe fresh or frozen berries into warm porridge until they burst, or cook them soft and mash them. Fold the mash into porridge, ricotta or yogurt. Flattening raw berries lowers the risk, but at 6 months a baby may struggle to pick up small pieces. Putting food into a baby's mouth raises choking risk, so let baby pick it up. Berries cooked in muffins and pancakes soften and can stay whole.

Once an older child takes bites without stuffing the mouth, fresh whole berries become manageable. For most children that comes after the first birthday. Even so, major health organizations consider whole blueberries a frequent cause of choking up to age four. You can approach whole berries by pressing them a bit less on each occasion.

Wild blueberries are nutritionally similar to large cultivated ones, though they may hold more antioxidants. They are about the size of a toddler's thumbnail, so the risk is a little higher and they are harder to prepare. You can still serve them flattened.

Dried blueberries

Dried blueberries can be served once soaked in hot water until fully soft. Hold off on unsoaked dried fruit until after the second birthday, when molars have come in and the child chews well without stuffing the mouth.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a mashmash

Cut: Fork mashed

Wash the berries and mash them well with a fork. Stir into yogurt, oat porridge or mashed banana. A whole berry is small and round, so it is not served at this age. Frozen berries can be warmed and mashed too.

9 months

9 months · How to cut and serveslice

Press each berry flat with your fingers, or halve it, before serving. Pick large, ripe berries. This form suits a baby who has begun picking up small pieces with a pincer grasp.

12 months

12 months · How to cut and serveslice

Keep serving the berries flattened or halved. Whole, firm berries are round, so do not give them unmashed or uncut before age 4.

Is blueberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

A whole blueberry is small, round and firm. Mash at 6 months. After 9 months, flatten each berry or halve it. Do not serve whole berries until age 4.

Blueberries are tiny, round, and usually firm. These traits raise the choking risk. Mash, flatten or halve them as the age cards describe.

Safe setting

Seat your child upright and stay within arm's reach during meals.

Is blueberry a common allergen?

Blueberry is not a common allergen, but allergy cases have been reported. Anyone sensitive to blueberry could react to its near relatives, cranberry and lingonberry, as well. One allergen in blueberry is a lipid transfer protein (LTP). This protein may cross-react with the LTPs in stone fruits (peach, apricot, cherry). Cross-reactions have been reported with other plants too. Examples are raspberry and grape. Also chestnut and hazelnut. Among grains, maize and barley. Among vegetables, asparagus, carrot and lettuce.

At the first try

Offer a small amount for the first few servings. If all is well, raise the amount slowly over later meals.

Frequently asked questions about blueberry

When can I serve whole blueberries?

A child who bites without stuffing the mouth can often manage fresh whole berries after the first birthday. Leading health bodies, however, count whole blueberries as a choking hazard until age four. You can approach it by pressing a bit less each time.

Can babies eat dried blueberries?

Yes, but only after soaking in hot water until fully soft. Keep unsoaked dried fruit for after the second birthday.

Are wild blueberries better?

Not necessarily. Nutrition is similar, though antioxidants may run a bit higher. They are smaller, so the choking risk is slightly higher. Serve them flattened.
