When can babies eat black elderberry?

Cooked elderberries only can be served around 6 months, once baby is ready. Elderberry syrups and extracts are better kept for older children.

Never serve raw elderberries

Do not serve raw elderberries, and that includes dried berries that were not cooked. Raw fruit, green berries, leaves, seeds and stems hold natural toxins that release cyanide. Swallowing them is unsafe.

Origin

Elder grows wild across Europe, the Americas, upland Asia and the rainforests of Australia. Its shiny berries are cooked into sauces, desserts, tonics and vinegar. Not every species is edible. The most widely eaten is Sambucus nigra, the black elderberry. The ripe berries are shiny and deep black, with juice strong enough to color drinks and baked goods.

Nutrition

Cooked elderberries give fiber and vitamin B6, which support digestion and nervous system development. They also hold iron, the essential fat ALA, flavonoids and anthocyanins. Some evidence suggests elderberry may shorten and ease upper respiratory infections in adults. More research is needed for children under 5.

How do you prepare black elderberry for babies?

Always cook elderberries. Boil fresh or dried berries in water and keep them cooking for at least an hour. An hour of cooking ripe elderberries removes the natural toxin in the fruit and seeds. There must be no stems, leaves or unripe berries in the pot.

Syrup and extract

Elderberry syrups and extracts are generally not for babies. There is not enough research on their safety in children under 5. Honey is often in syrups, and it is not safe before 12 months. If you want to offer one, ask your child's doctor first.

Elderberry tea

Toddlers can have elderberry tea once they turn one. Buy packaged tea instead of making it at home, so your child is not exposed to uncooked berries. Before 12 months, give no drinks beyond breast milk and formula.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a saucemash

Simmer fresh elderberries in a splash of water at a low boil for at least 60 minutes. Cook dried ones the same way, with more water, until fully soft and rehydrated. Take off every stem, leaf and unripe berry. Spoon the sauce over pulled meat, fish, vegetables, oat porridge or yogurt. You can also stir it into oatmeal or chia pudding.

9 months

9 months · How to cut and servecube

Cook the elderberries the same way for at least 60 minutes. At this age baby picks up small pieces with the pincer grasp. Cooked elderberry sauce can be served with vegetables, flaked fish or shredded meat in bite-size pieces. You can also stir the sauce into pancake or muffin batter and serve the baked pieces broken into bites.

12 months

12 months · How to servemash

Keep serving cooked elderberry sauce. Try flavors such as citrus, herbs and spices. If you wish, let your child help themselves to the sauce or jam from a small dish.

Is black elderberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Cooked elderberries are saucy and carry a low choking risk. In theory, any food can cause choking. Serve it in an age-suited way and stay close while baby eats.
