When can babies eat black beans?
Black beans can be served around 6 months, once baby is ready.
Black beans, also called black turtle beans, belong to the common bean family and originated in the Americas. The same family includes the white bean.
Nutrition
Black beans supply fiber, carbohydrate and protein. They contain plant omega-3 fats. Vitamin B1 and folate help the nervous system and the processing of nutrients. They also carry iron and zinc, which babies need. A baby's iron need rises from month 6, and black beans are a good dietary iron source at that stage. The black skin holds anthocyanins, plant compounds with antioxidant action.
Boost the iron
Vitamin C helps the body absorb plant iron. Serve black beans with vegetables rich in vitamin C.
How do you prepare black beans for babies?
Canned beans are fine, and so are dried beans that are cooked all the way through. Soaking dried beans is not required but helps. It shortens cooking, lowers lectin and the gas-causing sugar raffinose, and makes the beans and their nutrients easier to digest.
Overnight soak: use 2.5 liters of water per 454 g (1 lb) of dried beans. Soak for 4 hours at the very least, or overnight. Then drain and rinse them.
Hot soak: boil in the same ratio of water for 2 to 3 minutes. Switch off the heat and leave the beans for a few hours. Then drain and rinse.
Soaking and cooking lower plant compounds such as lectins, oxalates and phytates. In a balanced diet they are harmless for most people.
If beans will not soften
Dried beans stored a long time may not soften. Shelf life is about a year. More recently packed beans cook more easily.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to prepare as a puréemash
Mash or blend cooked black beans, either leaving it chunky or making a smooth paste. Baby can scoop it by hand, or you can use a spoon. To loosen the mash, stir in olive oil, yogurt, formula or breast milk. You can also fold it into polenta, vegetable purées, rice porridge or cooked greens. Since it is high in fiber, start with small portions.

Cut: Flattened
For a baby whose pincer grasp is developing, gently flatten each bean between thumb and finger. Keep offering mash or purée too. Baby can scoop by hand, dip fingers or cooked vegetable pieces, or practice with a spoon.
12 months
12 months · How to cut and servecube
At this age you can serve cooked beans whole, alone or in a family meal. Mash and preloaded spoons are still fine. To encourage self-feeding, put some beans on a spoon and set it beside the plate for your child to pick up.
Is black beans a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Black beans are small, round and firm when raw or undercooked. Cook them well. Mash them before 9 months and flatten them after that. Do not serve them whole at first.
Black beans are small and round, and firm when raw or undercooked. These traits can raise the choking risk. Mash or flatten them as the age cards describe.
Safe setting
Seat baby upright and stay within arm's reach during meals.
Is black beans a common allergen?
Black beans rarely cause allergy. Bean allergy has been reported in some people allergic to other legumes, such as peanut and soy. Allergy to one legume does not mean allergy to the others, though the chance of several legume allergies can rise. Most people with peanut or soy allergy eat other legumes without trouble.
Birch pollen allergy or pollen food allergy syndrome can make a child react to legumes, black beans included. A mild, passing tingle, itch or sting around the lips and tongue is the sign. A dangerous reaction is not expected.
At the first try
Give only a small amount over the first few servings. When all goes well, raise it slowly at later meals.
