When can babies eat bamboo shoots?

You can serve bamboo shoots once peeled and cooked, when your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months.

Bamboo has many species that grow in different parts of Asia. People have long used the plant as food and as building material. Mature bamboo is hard and woody, so it is not eaten. The young, tender shoots, however, are a popular vegetable. They are eaten fresh, or cooked, dried or pickled.

Bamboo shoots supply vitamin B6, a nutrient involved in over 100 tasks inside the body. They also provide fiber, zinc and potassium. These support the gut microbiome, growth, electrolyte balance and heart health.

How do you prepare bamboo shoots for babies?

Never serve it raw

Bamboo is served cooked only. Raw bamboo carries natural toxins that only cooking breaks down. Canned and jarred bamboo shoots were already cooked during processing.

No raw bamboo

Do not serve raw bamboo shoots. The natural toxins go away only with cooking.

Preserved products

Canned bamboo can sometimes be quite salty. To cut sodium, choose low-sodium products or rinse them under running water. Some canned and dried products contain sulfites, so read the label.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
