Arugula, served for 6 months

When can babies eat arugula?

You can start arugula once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months.

Arugula goes by orugia, rocket and rucola in other places. It comes from the Mediterranean region, and wild plants turn up across Africa, Asia and Europe. In the kitchen it acts like an herb. It gives pasta, pesto, pizza and salads a peppery bite.

It supplies calcium, fiber, folate, magnesium and potassium. Vitamins A, C and K are in it as well, along with plant compounds called glucosinolates. These nutrients support the gut, bones, brain, eyes and immunity.

How do you prepare arugula for babies?

Preparation basics

Raw arugula leaves are hard for a baby to chew. In the early months a finely chopped or saucy form suits better. Start with a small amount, since the peppery taste can take getting used to.

Some babies spit out bits of arugula. That is normal. Leaves can also cling to the tongue or palate and trigger a short, harmless gag.

About nitrates

Beets, carrots, lettuce, spinach, squash and arugula each have natural nitrates. Very large amounts can affect oxygen in the blood. Babies learning to eat do not take in excessive amounts. These vegetables fit into a varied diet.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare as a saucemash

Chop the arugula very fine, or blitz it into a pesto or sauce. Drizzle a small amount over baby's food. Raw leaves are hard to chew at this age, so a sauce is the easiest route. Begin with a little so baby can get used to the peppery bite. Finely minced arugula can also go into egg strips, meatballs or vegetable pancakes.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare finely choppedcube

Cut: Finely chopped

Keep offering arugula as a sauce, or chop the leaves fine and stir them into meals. Chopped pieces are fine too. Baby may spit them out, or bits may stick to the tongue or palate and cause harmless gagging. Sips of water from an open cup help wash them down. A little olive oil or sauce makes the pieces slide more easily. Eating little is expected, and this texture is good practice for biting and moving food around the mouth.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare roughly chopped or wholecube

Chop the leaves roughly, or serve them whole so your child can practice biting and tearing. The baby-leaf type is a younger leaf with a softer texture and milder taste, so it is easier for small children. Swallowing tends to increase as molars come in, though some spitting may continue. Put a piece of arugula on a fork and place it next to the food. Your child can then pick it up alone.

Is arugula a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Low risk. Leaves can cling to the tongue or palate and cause harmless gagging. Chop finely or turn into a sauce.

Prepared to suit your baby's age, arugula is a low choking risk. Even so, any food can cause choking.

Leaves can stick to the tongue or palate and cause a harmless gag. To lessen this, chop the arugula finely or make it into a sauce. Stay close while your baby eats.

Is arugula a common allergen?

Arugula is not a common allergen. Allergy to it is rare, though cases have been reported. It belongs to the mustard family. Arugula can trigger a reaction in a child allergic to mustard greens, cauliflower, cabbage or broccoli. Raw leaves are the likelier trigger.

People with pollen food allergy syndrome, especially those sensitive to mugwort pollen, may react to mustard-family vegetables like arugula as well. The usual result is a brief itch, tingle or burn inside the mouth, and a dangerous reaction is unlikely. Cooking arugula can reduce or remove the reaction.

Offer a small amount at the first meals. If nothing unusual happens, raise it slowly over later meals.

Frequently asked questions about arugula

Can babies eat raw arugula?

Yes, but at 6 months raw leaves are hard to chew. Chop finely or make a pesto or sauce. After 12 months, roughly chopped or whole leaves are fine.

Do the nitrates in arugula harm babies?

They are usually not a concern. Babies learning to eat do not take in much. Serve arugula and other nitrate-containing vegetables as part of a varied diet.

What if my baby spits out arugula?

That is normal. Keep offering small amounts. A sauce or a little olive oil makes swallowing easier.
