When can babies eat adzuki bean?

Adzuki beans can be offered around 6 months, once baby is ready for solids. They are beans native to Asia. They are also called red mung beans. There are hundreds of varieties across the continent, but the red one is the best known.

They are a good source of carbohydrate, fiber and protein, and they have more potassium than most other beans. Folate, vitamin B6, zinc and iron come along too, and they help blood, immune defense, nerves and metabolism. They also help the gut microbiome grow.

To boost iron uptake

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from plant foods. Serve adzuki beans with vitamin C-rich vegetables and fruits such as peppers or citrus.

How do you prepare adzuki bean for babies?

Cooking and soaking

Soaking is not required. Still, soaking before cooking shortens the cooking time. It lowers lectins and raffinose, the sugar that causes gas, and it makes iron and zinc easier to use.

For an overnight soak, cover dried beans with plenty of water for at least 4 hours or overnight. For a hot soak, bring them to a boil for 2 to 3 minutes, then switch off the heat and leave them in the water for several hours. With either method, drain and rinse before cooking.

Canned beans and lectins

Canned adzuki beans can be shared with baby. Some are sweetened. A taste now and then is fine, but wait until the child is older before serving them often.

Compounds such as lectins, oxalates and phytates drop with soaking and cooking. In healthy children on a balanced diet they are generally harmless.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Cut: Smooth puree

Blend well-cooked adzuki beans until they form a smooth paste. Offer it on a preloaded spoon, or spread it thinly on bread or toast strips. You can also stir it into yogurt, dal, mashed vegetables or rice porridge. Begin with small portions to avoid belly upset.

9 months

Cut: Flattened

Press each very soft bean flat between your fingers before serving. You can keep offering the paste too. Baby can scoop it by hand or spoon, or use it as a dip.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare as whole beanscube

By now your child can eat whole, well-cooked beans on their own or mixed into a meal. If you prefer, keep pressing them flat one by one, or serve a paste.

Is adzuki bean a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Small, round and hard when raw or undercooked. Cook until very soft. Offer a paste at first, then lightly pressed beans from 9 months.

Adzuki beans are small and round, and hard when raw or undercooked. These traits raise the choking risk. Serve a paste in the early months. At 9 months, press each bean flat. After 12 months you can offer whole, well-cooked beans. Stay beside your baby during meals.

No hard beans

Raw or undercooked beans are not safe for babies. Cook them until they are completely soft.

Is adzuki bean a common allergen?

Allergy to adzuki is uncommon and the beans are outside the usual allergen list, yet a few rare reactions are on record. Some people allergic to other legumes, such as peanut and soy, react to beans too. Allergy to one legume does not always mean allergy to all of them, and most people with peanut or soy allergy tolerate other legumes. Adzuki is a close relative of mung bean, so allergy to one may raise the chance of reacting to the other.

Children with birch pollen allergy or pollen-food syndrome can react to legumes. The usual result is a brief itchy, tingly or stinging mouth, and a serious reaction is unlikely.

Start with a small amount at the first meals. If nothing happens, increase the portion slowly.
