When can babies eat sunflower oil?
Sunflower oil can be used once your baby seems ready for solids, usually at 6 months. Use it raw in sauces and dressings, or in cooking.
The sunflower is a plant native to North America. Today its oil is a kitchen staple in Eastern Europe and Russia.
Nutrition
It supplies a mix of single and multiple unsaturated fats, plus vitamin E and antioxidants. They benefit the heart, growth, the developing brain, eyesight and immunity. It also helps the body absorb fat-soluble nutrients. The amounts depend on the oil type.
How do you prepare sunflower oil for babies?
Every baby develops at their own pace. These tips are general guidance.
From 6 months you can use sunflower oil in sauces, dressings and cooking. If you like, put a very small amount on your baby's tray to taste alone. After 12 months, keep using it in sauces, marinades and cooking. Your child may like dipping age-suitable foods into an oily sauce.
Cooking
Refined sunflower oil stands up to high heat. It suits frying and roasting. High-oleic oil is rich in monounsaturated fat and holds up better under heat. Cold-pressed oil is best used raw to keep its nutrients.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Sunflower oil is low risk. In theory any food can cause choking. Prepare the dish you use it in to suit your baby's age and development. Stay beside your baby during meals and keep the setting safe.
Is sunflower oil a common allergen?
Sunflower oil is not a common allergen. It comes from sunflower seeds, and seed allergy is rare. The oil is mostly refined. Refining strips out most of the allergy-causing proteins.
Cold-pressed and unrefined oil may keep more protein. If your child has reacted to sunflower seeds, ask your doctor before trying the oil.
