When can babies eat porcini mushroom?

Porcini mushroom can be offered once baby is ready for solids, around 6 months. It must be cooked.

Porcini grows wild in forests across the northern hemisphere. Its Italian name means "little pigs". Wild boars love to eat it. It is hard to farm, so fresh porcini is costly. Dried porcini is easier to find.

Do not forage your own

Many poisonous species in the wild look like porcini. Do not forage mushrooms for your baby unless you are a trained mycologist. Buy from a trusted seller.

Nutrition

Fiber, iron, and potassium are well represented in porcini. It also offers a little calcium. Fiber feeds gut bacteria, iron supports red blood cells, potassium helps the heart and calcium helps bones. It also holds an antioxidant called ergothioneine.

Mushrooms also carry prebiotics. These are particular carbohydrates that feed the helpful bacteria in the gut. It is a high-fiber food. Add it slowly and regularly. A little gas or loose stool shows digestion adjusting.

How do you prepare porcini mushroom for babies?

Always cook the mushroom. Raw is possible, but cooked mushroom is easier to digest and chew. Cooking also lowers the risk of foodborne illness.

If you use dried porcini, soften it fully in boiling water, then chop. The soaking liquid adds good flavor to soups and dishes. Keep the stem away from baby.

Sulfites sometimes preserve dried mushrooms. Read the label. Sulfites can trigger allergy-like reactions, especially in people with asthma.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Safe preparation

Chop fine, cook through. Skip the stem. If you give a large cap, make it bigger than baby's mouth.

Is porcini mushroom a common allergen?

Mushroom is not a common allergen. Mushroom allergy is rare but does occur. Anaphylaxis and skin rashes have been reported in people who handle mushrooms. Mushrooms contain chitin, a carbohydrate also found in shellfish and insects, which may add to an allergic reaction in some people.

People with oral allergy syndrome, especially those sensitive to mold, may react to mushroom too. This syndrome causes brief mouth itching and a dangerous reaction is not expected. Cooking the mushroom can reduce or even remove the reaction.

Give a small amount at the first servings. If there is no reaction, raise it slowly.
